Dasburg: Hiking in the Our Valley and History
Accommodation in Dasburg
Dasburg in the Our Valley combines hiking trails through valley and hillside landscapes with local history shaped by its castle, crafts and heritage. During your stay, you can choose between exploring the landscape and discovering the village centre. The trails offer different experiences: sometimes the focus is on a longer circular route, sometimes on changing views of the border river or the history of the region.
Hiking trails between the Our Valley and hillside woodland
Nature Park Southern Eifel Hiking Trail No. 8 is a moderately difficult 10.7-kilometre circular route that starts and ends in the centre of Dasburg. The trail passes through Dasburg and along the Our Valley. Its route through the winding valley and across hillside woodland leads back to Dasburg. Along the way, it brings the Dasburg castle ruins and their view over the Our Valley into focus, as well as Dasburg’s history as a historic craft village. The stated distance and moderate difficulty give you concrete points of reference for fitting the loop into your day’s plans.
Hiking Trail No. 9 offers a different experience: roughly half of it follows the Our, the border river, close to the water, while the other half runs halfway up the hillside. This gives you two different perspectives on the river. If you are interested in trails with a historical connection, there is also the “From Grey to Green” hiking trail: it starts in the Eifel village of Dasburg on the Our and follows the former Westwall from the Nazi era. Near Hiking Trail No. 8 are the Our Valley bunker trail and the Rellesmühle mill, with its fish ladder.
Castle, village centre and stories passed down through generations
The audio tour through the village centre and castle grounds is a short route with ten stops. Visitors can hear entertaining information about the eventful history of the village and castle. The castle ruins also shape the view of Dasburg; a walk along their perimeter wall is also well worth seeing. This lets you explore local history not only through individual buildings, but also along a route through the village centre.
At the Plague Chapel, art history meets a traditional legend. The altar reredos probably dates from the 17th century. A 20-centimetre-tall Late Gothic wooden Madonna stands in a glass case. According to legend, a carved wooden Madonna was found on the rock three times before the chapel was built there. Dasburg is also a member of the Route Gottfried von Bouillon association. It aims to bring historic buildings in the border region of Belgium, France, Luxembourg and Rhineland-Palatinate to the attention of the public.
This way, you can shape your plans around specific interests rather than starting with a general idea of your stay.
