Plütscheid: Hiking Trails, Forest and History
Accommodation in Plütscheid
Discover Plütscheid on Foot
Plütscheid is best explored via the hiking trails of the South Eifel Nature Park. Two easy circular hikes offer a useful basis for comparison when planning, with their distances and approximate durations; Trail No. 21 offers different highlights, including forest, the Prüm and Staudenhof.
South Eifel Nature Park Hiking Trail No. 19 is an easy circular route starting in Plütscheid: it is 7.6 km long and takes about 2 hours and 15 minutes. No. 20 starts and ends in Plütscheid and is also an easy to very easy circular hike, covering 8.5 km in about 2 hours and 20 minutes. The approximate times differ by only around five minutes, even though No. 20 is about 0.9 km longer. When comparing these two routes, the difference is therefore more significant in terms of distance and route than in the time required. The condition of and access to Trail No. 20 may change; check before setting out.
Views from the Heights, Ridges and Forest
Hiking Trail No. 19 offers views across the Eifel heights and into the Prüm Valley. No. 20 follows a wooded ridge shaped over thousands of years by the Ehlenzbach and Kleiner Ehlenzbach streams. Near the destination is a 530-metre-high hill with panoramic views. South Eifel Nature Park Hiking Trail No. 21 passes through Geweberwald, with its beeches, oaks and spruces. The trails therefore offer a variety of landscapes: views across the heights, a shaped ridge and a forest with several tree species.
Staudenhof: A Hike with a Historical Connection
Hiking Trail No. 21 passes the abandoned village of Staudenhof. From there, it follows narrow paths along the Prüm towards Mauelermühle, before climbing back towards Plütscheid. In the 19th century, Staudenhof was considered Germany’s smallest municipality: it covered 18 hectares and had about 128 residents around 1821. The old school is considered the only still habitable house at this remote location. This route thus brings together a historic settlement and a concrete insight into its former size.
