Dudeldorf: Discover Architectural History and Trails
Accommodation in Dudeldorf
Dudeldorf combines striking town gates and historic houses with a castle, an old parish church and trails through the surrounding area. Its architectural history spans medieval fortifications and houses dating from around 1600 and 1700. Those who enjoy spending time outdoors will also find various starting points for walks, hikes and bike rides. When planning your stay, you can weigh up the history of the old town and time spent exploring the landscape.
Town Gates and Historic Houses
Dudeldorf’s fortifications date from the period after 1345. Parts of them have been preserved north of the Upper Gate: they form a cemetery wall and enclose the castle grounds. The Upper Gate itself is a stately gate tower faced with ashlar blocks, dated to 1453. The Lower Gate is a different type of structure: the plastered gatehouse had its passage altered around 1840. Together, the two gates offer a tangible impression of the medieval town fortifications and the changes made to them later.
The old town also reveals a variety of architectural styles. The listed area includes long rows of craftsmen’s and agricultural smallholders’ houses, as well as stepped-gable houses, open staircases, courtyards and wells. The house at Hauptstraße 23 has a stepped gable and partial half-timbering and dates from around 1700. Hauptstraße 20 is a hall-and-kitchen house, probably dating from around or shortly after 1600; its associated barn is dated to 1729. The “Zum alten Brauhaus” inn at Herrengasse 2 is a three-part ensemble with three storeys. In front of Hauptstraße 17 stands a running fountain with a fountain column dated to 1859, a red sandstone trough and a putto in the Neo-Renaissance style.
Another historic thread leads to the wool-weaving industry: Dudeldorf was a regional centre for this craft in the former district of Bitburg. Wool weavers are recorded here in 1624. This date adds another historical dimension to the town, beyond its visible gates and houses.
Dudeldorf Castle and Maria Königin
Dudeldorf Castle brings together different architectural elements: a medieval residential tower, an 18th-century two-winged manor house, a courtyard with a round-arched passageway and a garden with a pavilion. The municipal section of the castle is used for exhibitions, club activities, a wedding room and other events. The courtyard and farm buildings serve as venues for cultural events. If you are planning a visit as part of an exhibition or event, check the latest local information about access in advance.
The parish church of Maria Königin was built in 1909 in the Neo-Gothic style. It houses older works of art, including a 14th-century sculpture of John the Baptist. The church is also the starting point for the Gelöbnis Tour. If you are interested in architectural history, you can include the church, town gates and castle in your stay; if you would rather be out and about, it also provides a starting point for a route.
Walks, Hikes and Bike Rides
For a walk through the town, there is a historic circular route between the medieval town gates. The Pestflämmchen Trail starts at the old town wall in Dudeldorf Bürgerpark. Another route is the Gelöbnis Tour around Dudeldorf: it starts at Maria Königin, visits six chapels and numerous wayside crosses, and ends at St. Martin in Ordorf. The start and end points and the named stops help distinguish these routes. Check the local waymarking before setting off.
Cycling and hiking are also options in the surrounding countryside. The 130-kilometre Kyll Valley Cycle Path is considered easily accessible from Dudeldorf. This offers a choice of different focuses: a historic circular walk between the gates, routes with church stops and a longer cycling route.
