Hüttingen bei Lahr lies in the Southern Eifel Nature Park, surrounded by gentle hills and dense forests. The Stove and Iron Museum, historic buildings and two circular hiking trails offer a range of highlights: crafts and architectural history are just as much in focus as streams, valleys and open landscapes. You can shape your days around your interests in culture, nature and activity.

Stove-Making and the Collection

The Stove and Iron Museum explores the development of stove-making, featuring cast-iron stoves from the 16th to the 20th century. Covering around 500 m², it displays more than 200 different cast-iron stoves and 40,000 exhibits. These include, among other things, stove plates, scales and weights, waffle irons and communion wafer irons, fireplace saws, flatirons, wall and grandfather clocks, and gramophones. The collection thus ranges from stove-making to a broad selection of historic objects.

From 1 November until Easter, the museum is open by appointment. From Good Friday to 31 October, it is open Wednesday to Sunday, from 2:00 pm to 6:00 pm. Arrange your visit in advance between November and Easter, and check the seasonal opening hours before you travel.

Church and Historic Farmsteads

The Catholic branch church of St. Anthony at Antoniusstraße 1 is a simply historicist hall church dating from 1900. The architect is said to have been Knepper from Diekirch, Luxembourg. At Antoniusstraße 6 stands a representative three-wing farmstead dating from the 19th century. It comprises a residence with a bakehouse and a retirement dwelling; the date 1838 is inscribed on the residence.

The residential and agricultural buildings on Talstraße also tell the story of the village’s architectural history. The substantial residence at number 14 has a five-bay residential section and dates from around 1840 to 1850. The two-bay bakehouse, or retirement dwelling, is probably only slightly younger. Together, these examples offer insights into different architectural forms and dates from the 19th century.

Circular Hiking Trails Through Valleys and Over the Heights

Circular hiking trail No. 43 follows the Lahrer Bach to Hüttingen and passes through a hilly, open landscape. Along the way, views extend across fields, meadows and villages. The trail is marked throughout with the Southern Eifel Nature Park logo and the corresponding route number.

Circular hiking trail No. 49 crosses the valleys of the Alsbach and the Lahrer Bach and loops around the ridge formed by Fronenberg, Aspel and Frankenberg. It is classified as a moderate hike, 14.0 kilometres long, with a stated duration of 3 hours and 20 minutes. If you are looking for a specific timeframe to plan your day, these details provide a guide for this hike.

Church Fair and Eifel Specialties

A January 2020 report by SWR described a church fair where residents gathered on the feast day of Saint Anthony; the celebration had previously been absent for a long time. Ask locally whether it is being held again.

The article describes Kirmesdröp as an Eifel schnapps distilled by Michael Fisch in Hüttingen. If you are interested, check locally whether production is still ongoing. The article also reports on traditional Noutzen, also known as quark doughnuts, which are baked in Hüttingen and described as an Eifel specialty.
