Rodershausen is located in the South Eifel Nature Park. Gently rolling countryside and forest shape the surrounding area, providing a setting for hikes and nature excursions alike. The village also has historic traces that offer another perspective on your trip: wayside shrines, a wayside chapel, the parish church and old crosses.

Hills, Forests and Trails

Rodershausen’s planning area lies on the Karlshausen Plateau, a gently undulating plateau more than 500 metres above sea level. The plateau is part of the Western Eifel. This means you can enjoy a landscape of gentle ridges and forest, with a clear emphasis on nature and outdoor activities. The surrounding area offers numerous hiking trails through the South Eifel countryside; trails through the South Eifel Nature Park provide views across the landscape.

Hiking and Navigation

If you are looking for a specific route name while planning, you can find Circular Route No. 35, GemĂĽnd-Dauwelshausen: it runs along the Rodershausen planning area. The route is marked on a 2020 Nature Park experience map. Check a current map before setting out to make sure you can navigate the route you have planned. The trails and local history offer different points of interest: you can focus your stay more on the landscape or on its historic landmarks.

Wayside Shrines, Chapel and Parish Church

Rodershausen has two wayside shrines, dating from 1879 and 1907; both depict a PietĂ . The 1907 shrine on the main road has a niche structure topped by a gable and contains a PietĂ  that was probably mass-produced. Northwest of Rodershausen, on the road to Dauwelshausen, stands the 1879 shrine. Designed like a Station of the Cross, it contains an almost fully three-dimensional PietĂ . The shared motif connects the two monuments, while their designs take different forms.

A round-arched wayside chapel dating from 1910 complements these religious buildings. The Catholic Parish Church of St. James is a Gothic Revival hall church built in 1898; it is attributed to the architect Knepper of Diekirch. The cemetery also contains a Baroque shaft cross dating from 1705 and a terminal cross from 1688. If you appreciate architectural and local history as well as hiking, you will find several tangible historic points of interest here.

Village Life and Getting There

The Rodershausen Carnival Association holds a Kappensitzung carnival event each year; dates and programmes may vary. An EMV timetable valid from 15 December 2024 lists the Rodershausen Ort stop on route 491. Check current connections before travelling.

Rodershausen is an especially good option when choosing a holiday destination if you want to focus on hiking trails, scenery and small-scale religious heritage. The wider destination of Eifelkreis Bitburg-PrĂĽm offers additional themes, including mining, palaeontology and historic residential culture.

More to Discover in Eifelkreis Bitburg-PrĂĽm

The Devonium in Waxweiler presents the connections between palaeontology and the science of fossil life in an engaging way. At the Mühlenberger Stollen Bleialf visitor mine, a mining trail with numerous information boards explores the area’s mining history. The one-hour guided tours through the mine cover everything from ore extraction and geology to applied technology; check seasonal opening information before your visit.

The water castle of Rittersdorf, around 700 years old, has remained almost unchanged since it was built and offers a glimpse into late-medieval and early modern Renaissance residential culture. The castle has a privately run restaurant serving fine country cuisine; check that the restaurant is open before visiting. These regional examples offer a different focus from Rodershausen’s hiking landscape and religious monuments.
