Neidenbach in the Kyllburger Waldeifel

Neidenbach is located in the Kyllburger Waldeifel. Extensive traces of Roman settlements and historic buildings shape the town’s history; there are also two differently designed hiking routes in and near Neidenbach. For your planning, you can easily sort out your interests: the circular route, valley trail and architectural history each offer a distinct focus.

Roman traces and history

Extensive traces of Roman settlements can be found along the northern municipal boundary. West of Neidenbach, a boundary stone bearing the inscription FINES PA GI CARUCUM was found on a Roman road. Until around 1800, Neidenbach was divided between a part belonging to the Electorate of Trier and a part belonging to the Duchy of Luxembourg. A Roman trace and a later territorial division thus offer two different historical perspectives.

Architectural history in the town

The parish church of St. Peter is a Baroque plastered building dating from 1924 to 1926. At the same time, some of its structural elements date back further: the window surrounds and choir date from 1778, while the west tower, including the bell storey, dates from the 16th or early 17th century. The church thus reveals several distinct periods of construction.

At Densborner Straße, buildings Nos. 14 and 16 form a listed historic district comprising two single-storey houses and their associated farm buildings from the first half of the 19th century. At the intersection of Röderweg and Kyllburger Straße stands a simple rubble-stone chapel dating from 1933. Kyllburger Straße is also home to a washing place, a water basin and a bleaching meadow, which are probably from the 19th century. Together, these examples show the built heritage at different scales: from the church to houses and farm buildings, as well as places associated with everyday life.

Hiking trails and everyday life

The Bitburger LandGang Am Dreeskopf is a 2.7-kilometre circular hiking trail around Neidenbach. Near Neidenbach, the marked St. Thomas Nature Trail runs for 2.5 kilometres through the Heilenbach Valley in the Zwischen Ueß und Kyll landscape protection area. It leads from St. Thomas via Kloster St. Thomas to the Neidenbach waterfalls. The two routes are similar in length; the difference in their format is more significant when choosing between them: a circular route around Neidenbach or a trail through the valley with named destinations.

The Neidenbach village shop offers fresh products from its bakery and butcher counters, as well as other everyday essentials. It also serves as a stop where hikers and cyclists can get refreshments. Alongside trails and historic buildings, local shops and a place to stop along the way are therefore part of the townscape—things you can take into account when planning your trip.

More to discover in the Bitburg-Prüm district

The wider travel destination of the Bitburg-Prüm district offers further cultural and historical attractions. The Devonium in Waxweiler presents complex topics in palaeontology and the science of fossil life in an engaging way. The Westwall Museum is housed on three accessible levels of a bunker and features a military history exhibition in underground corridors and rooms. The Rittersdorf moated castle, around 700 years old, has remained almost unchanged since it was built and offers an impressive picture of late medieval and Renaissance domestic culture in the early modern period.
