Malberg lies in a basin shaped by the Kyll. Wooded slopes surround the village and contribute to a comparatively mild climate; Malberg Castle stands on a ridge above the Kyll. Here, landscape and architectural history meet: the castle complex adds a historic accent, while the Kyll and wooded slopes form the natural setting.

Malberg Castle: Architectural History and Garden

Nothing remains of the medieval castle. The present-day building of the Old Castle probably dates from around 1580 and is part of a complex that includes an 18th-century palace and a gatehouse with a clock tower dating from 1709. The different dates reflect the development of the complex. The Baroque castle church was completed in 1710 and features valuable interior furnishings.

The castle also has the Iron Garden, a French garden dating from 1713/14. Originally, it served as both a pleasure garden and a kitchen garden, where vegetables and medicinal plants were grown. The castle gardens are open to visitors seasonally, and admission is free. The interiors can only be viewed on guided tours. Check current visiting arrangements before your trip.

Other Historic Landmarks in Malberg

Malberg’s history is also evident beyond the castle complex. The Old Church was built in 1755 and used as a barn from 1833 onwards. Other landmarks include an ironworks dating from 1749 and a hop house from the mid-19th century. St. Quirin is a former Catholic parish church and castle church in Malberg. Together, these landmarks span ecclesiastical architectural history, former use as a barn, ironworking and hop growing.

The Castle Route: Forest, Kyll and Sandstone

For time outdoors, the Castle Route offers another perspective on Malberg. It is a circular trail around the village that follows the Kyll; along the way, it passes red sandstone formations surrounded by herbs, meadows, hedges and woodland. The family-friendly Castle Route runs through the MĂĽhlenwald and past Malberg Castle. On the same loop, riverside scenery, woodland and the castle offer different points of interest. The route may change; check the latest information before setting out.

More Cultural Perspectives in the Eifelkreis Bitburg-PrĂĽm

Other places in the Eifelkreis Bitburg-Prüm offer their own cultural highlights. The Devonium in Waxweiler presents complex aspects of palaeontology and the science of fossil life in an engaging way. The Westwall Museum is housed on three accessible floors of a bunker; its military history exhibition displays artefacts in underground corridors and rooms. At the Mühlenberger Stollen Bleialf visitor mine, guests learn about ore mining in Bleialf, from geology to applied technology, on one-hour guided tours. These attractions explore different themes from Malberg’s castle and local history: fossil life, military history and mining.

Rittersdorf Moated Castle, around 700 years old, offers another historical perspective. It has remained almost unchanged since it was built and provides a striking picture of late medieval and early modern Renaissance domestic culture. The castle houses a privately run restaurant serving refined regional cuisine; check whether the restaurant is open before visiting.
