Schönecken brings together protected nature, visible history and a distinctive Easter tradition. The town lies within the German-Belgian Nature Park and the North Eifel Nature Park, and directly borders the Schönecker Schweiz nature reserve. At the same time, the open-air gallery at the Old Distillery is accessible year-round, around the clock. This gives you a choice of different highlights when planning your trip: hikes, public art, castle ruins and a competition on Easter Monday.

Hiking routes of different lengths

The approximately 12 km-long hiking route “Prümer Land Tour Route 2 – Schönecken and Surroundings” starts and ends at the Schönecker Schweiz hiking car park, at the entrance to Schönecken from the direction of Prüm. Another option is the specially signposted “Querbeet durch die Schönecker Schweiz” tour. It is approximately 20 km long and rated as moderately difficult. The two tours can therefore be distinguished by their approximate distance; “Querbeet” also has a stated moderate difficulty level. If you plan to take Route 2, check the local notices before setting off.

Schönecken’s connection with nature extends beyond the names of its routes: the town lies within two nature parks, while the Schönecker Schweiz nature reserve directly borders it. To choose your day’s activities, you can make a direct comparison: an approximately 12 km-long hiking route or a roughly 20 km-long, moderately difficult tour. This allows you to factor the approximate distance and—in the case of “Querbeet”—the stated difficulty into your plans.

Art and castle history in Schönecken

The open-air gallery is located at the Old Distillery and is accessible year-round, around the clock. Above the fountain at the Old Distillery, there is also a large sandstone sculpture in the shape of a scallop shell. It points to the Way of St. James, which passes through the town. The artwork thus combines a striking motif with a reference to the pilgrim route.

Schönecken Castle Ruins stand on a mountain spur high above the community. A mountain spur is a projecting ridge of land and describes the site’s position. The castle is preserved as a ruin, is owned by the state of Rhineland-Palatinate and is designated as a monument zone. Its location, state of preservation and monument status offer different historical points of reference, without suggesting that it is a fully preserved castle.

The Schönecken Eierlage on Easter Monday

Another cultural highlight is the Schönecken Eierlage: a competition between two young runners, held every year on Easter Monday by the Schönecken Junggesellen-Sodalität. The tradition has continued for several centuries in almost unchanged form. Unlike the open-air gallery, which is accessible year-round, around the clock, the Eierlage takes place on a specific public holiday. If you want to plan your trip around this tradition, Easter Monday is the key date.
