Wolsfeld: Churches, Castle and Heritage Trails
Accommodation in Wolsfeld
Wolsfeld lies in the Nims valley, surrounded by woodland and within the Southern Eifel Nature Park. Historic churches, a castle and two heritage trails give the village a strong cultural focus.
Churches and architectural history in Wolsfeld
The Old St Hubertus Church has been a pilgrimage church since the 15th century. Its Romanesque chancel tower stands beside a two-aisled hall built around 1500. Notable features include a polychrome stone altar from the late Renaissance, dated 1620 and attributed to the circle of Trier sculptor Hans Ruprecht Hoffmann.
The New St Hubertus Church adds a later architectural touch: this hall church dates from 1926 and is designed in post-classical forms. Wolsfeld Castle, also called the Burg, is a 17th-century manor house built for the Lords of Enschringen. The date 1664 is inscribed on the door lintel.
The St Hubertus Fountain and St Hubertus Cross in Wolsfelderberg also date from 1691. The village’s development has left further traces: more than 50 village-renewal projects have been carried out, mainly in the historic centre around Wolsfeld Castle. Several buildings have received the Baukultur EIFEL award. Together, the churches, manor house and monuments tell the story of different periods in the village’s history.
Two heritage trails, two route lengths
The Bitburger LandGang Heritage Tour is 4.3 kilometres long, rated easy and takes about an hour. It starts and finishes at the church car park in Wolsfeld. Along the way, the tour offers a view towards Wolsfelderberg. Its visitor tip also turns the spotlight on the production of Eifel spirits and liqueurs—a culinary theme alongside the architectural history.
The Baukultur EIFEL themed trail is shorter: it is 487 metres long and runs from EuropastraĂźe by the church to Holsthumer StraĂźe in Wolsfeld. This trail is also rated easy. Comparing the stated route lengths can help with planning: the shorter themed route and the 4.3-kilometre Heritage Tour involve different time and distance commitments. Tour information may be updated; check with the provider before setting out.
The Heritage Tour is considered suitable for families with children. Wolsfeld also has a playground and a meadow with llamas and alpacas. As visitor facilities may change, it is advisable to check these details before your visit.
