Ockenheim brings together nature, local history and wine traditions, offering a varied range of experiences for a stay. Orchards and fruit growing shape the surrounding area; trails, a museum and a pilgrimage route each offer a different way to discover the village. You can focus on walks and circular hikes, explore historical homes and schoolrooms at the local history museum, or take an interest in the religious landmarks along the route to Jakobsberg. Village festivals and farmyards open seasonally add regional wine culture to the picture.

Circular trails with different themes

The Generations Trail is a circular route of about 4 km around Ockenheim’s built-up area. The route includes around 15 stops, including seating areas, a playground and outdoor fitness equipment. Along the way, there are places to rest as well as spots for play and exercise. Numerous other circular hiking trails also start directly in Ockenheim, so the choice is not limited to the Generations Trail.

Jakobsberg Monastery lies above Ockenheim and borders a nature reserve known for its biodiversity. Circular trails of 3 and 6 km start at the monastery. The shorter loop runs above Ockenheim, while the longer one includes the village; both lead to the Peace Cross on Hörnchen. From there, you can enjoy a view across the varied landscape. The main differences between the loops are their length and route, while the Peace Cross is a shared destination.

Another route is a pilgrimage path from Ockenheim to Jakobsberg. Along the way, you pass a group of figures depicting the Crucifixion from 1751, seven stations dedicated to the Seven Sorrows of Mary, and the Oath Column before reaching the Chapel of the Fourteen Holy Helpers. The chapel is a pilgrimage site established in 1720. Religious images, the column and the chapel give this route a different focus from the circular trails.

History to see and experience

The Ockenheim Local History Museum displays fully furnished homes from around 1900 and from the 1950s. These exhibits invite you to compare domestic life in two different periods. The schoolroom is interactive, too: you can sit at old school desks, write on a slate, do sums with an abacus and try out a mechanical typewriter. So you can do more than simply view the furnishings; you can try out a range of former writing and calculating tools for yourself.

The collection also includes Celtic and Roman finds, as well as a model of a Frankish settlement. The finds and model broaden the focus beyond the homes and schoolroom to include other aspects of history.

Wine culture in Ockenheim

Village festivals invite guests to experience regional wines and Rheinhessen hospitality. Seasonal wine taverns open their farmyards in Ockenheim. If you would like to include this kind of wine culture in your travel plans, bear in mind that the farmyards are open seasonally when planning your visit.

Another wine-related discovery awaits at Jakobsberg Monastery: the vine arbor presents 120 grape varieties. In Ockenheim, wine is part of both seasonal village festivals and open farmyards, and the diversity of the vines on display at the monastery.
