Engelstadt combines wine and fruit growing with an old village center in the rolling landscape of Rheinhessen. It also offers historic buildings, recurring festivals and a cycling route with climbs and sweeping views.

Wine, Village Center and Places to Eat

Engelstadt is shaped largely by wine and fruit growing. Its old village center lies in the rolling landscape of Rheinhessen. The village is also associated with local wineries and regional specialties, enjoyed with a glass of wine. Here, a cultivated landscape meets a distinctive culinary tradition.

The Gutschänke Am Römerberg is on the outskirts of Engelstadt; its wine garden invites you to linger. Check current opening arrangements in advance. Weingut Zimmer-Mengel also offers a wine experience among the vineyards: it is located on an estate where guests can experience and enjoy wine. Confirm visitor access before your trip.

Kerb and Jazz with Regional Wine

Engelstadt’s Kerb traditionally lasts five days and takes place on the second weekend in September. The program includes live music as well as activities for children and young people. If you want to plan your trip around this festival, keep an eye on the dates and program.

Jazz for 5 also brings wine and music together: at Dorfplatz Dalles, you can sample Engelstadt wines, sparkling wines and semi-sparkling wines, alongside dishes from the kitchen and grill. The Fun Time Big Band performs live jazz. Since Kerb and Jazz for 5 are recurring events, it is best to check the dates and programs before your trip.

Historic Details in the Village Center

The village fountain on Hauptstraße bears the date 1865. This is considered its renovation date; the fountain itself is believed to be older. The Protestant parish church is another medieval landmark in Engelstadt. First mentioned in 1228, it is dedicated to Saint Maurice. The west tower is classified as Romanesque, and relief motifs can be seen on the lintel of the south portal. These features give the building a distinct historical character.

The Fruit Route and Its Changes in Elevation

The Fruit Route runs from Nieder-Hilbersheim to Engelstadt, climbing 150 meters along the way. It follows farm tracks and local roads. From the plateau, expansive views open up. Just beyond Engelstadt is the Wingertsschaukel, with a small observation tower; it serves as a rest stop before the descent into the Selz Valley. The climb, views and subsequent descent make for distinct sections of the route. Before setting out, check for current route information about detours and the Wingertsschaukel.

Culture in the Wider Mainz-Bingen Destination

The wider Mainz-Bingen destination also offers cultural attractions beyond Engelstadt’s village history. At the Museum bei der Kaiserpfalz in Ingelheim, the permanent exhibition spans the Stone Age to the High Middle Ages. The Museum am Strom in Bingen has a permanent exhibition dedicated to the life and work of Hildegard of Bingen. It also displays the 66-piece Bingen set of medical instruments: the tools of a Roman physician from the 2nd century.
