Sankt Johann is known as a wine village in Rheinhessen and preserves a distinctive historic townscape. Wine shapes more than just the impression the place makes: almost half of the municipality’s area is planted with vines. There are also the heights of the Wißberg, trails of varying lengths and St. John’s Church, whose construction history dates back to the 14th century. Here, landscape, winegrowing and cultural-historical discoveries come together to create a varied portrait of the village.

Winegrowing and the character of the village

The wine landscape can be explored through specific names. Winemakers in Sankt Johann produce wines from the Klostergarten Steinberg and Geyersberg sites, as well as from the Abtey vineyard area. Together with the large share of vineyards in the municipality’s area, this explains why Sankt Johann is considered a wine-growing village. If you are interested in local wine culture, these names offer a starting point for learning more about the village’s winegrowing.

The Wißberg and its trails

The Wißberg reaches 270 metres and is one of the highest elevations in Rheinhessen. Located on the hill within the municipality of Sankt Johann is the Golfclub Rheinhessen golf course. Its course covers 75 hectares, is a par-72 championship course and offers sweeping panoramic views across the Rheinhessen countryside. This makes the Wißberg a place where scenic experiences and golf provide different options for planning your day.

The trails also offer different experiences. The Hiwweltour Wißberg is a 9.8-kilometre circular hiking trail around the Wißberg, with a stated elevation gain of 209 metres. The Panoramaweg on the Wißberg is considerably shorter at 4.5 kilometres and has little elevation gain. Its features include seating and distant views; along the way, there are also opportunities to watch golfers and winemakers at work. You can choose between a longer circular hike and a shorter route with places to rest. The Klimaschutzpfad follows the Wißberg-Panoramaweg and covers climate protection and sustainability in a family-friendly format. Check the latest route information before setting out if you plan to include these trails in your day.

Church, estate courtyards and history

The present-day St. John’s Church began to take shape in the 1330s or early 1340s: construction began during this period, and the first building phase was probably completed by the end of the 1350s. It is a High Gothic three-aisled pseudo-basilica and one of the most significant village churches in Rheinhessen. Five wall paintings have been preserved inside. Its architectural form and paintings offer two specific points of interest if you are interested in local history.

The historic townscape also includes Gründerzeit-era estate courtyards. A large number of these complexes have been preserved. Together with St. John’s Church, they shape the cultural side of Sankt Johann, while the vineyards and the Wißberg reveal other facets of the village.

Tradition and travel planning

The Sankt Johanner-Markt has a tradition dating back to Sankt Johann’s pilgrimage era; it is held on the weekend after 24 June. If you would like to include the market in your trip, check the specific event dates in advance.

When looking for accommodation in Sankt Johann, the focus of your planned stay can be a helpful starting point: winegrowing and local history, the trails on the Wißberg or the golf club each offer a different emphasis. Think about which topics you would like to spend time on, then compare specific accommodation features and current availability in the respective listings.
