Discover Acht in the Achterbach valley
Accommodation in Acht
Acht lies in the valley of the Achterbach, the stream that also gave the village its name. The valley and the origin of the name offer a concrete starting point for exploring the village’s history. This impression continues in the center with another cultural theme: the village-center project includes the restored St. Hubertus Chapel. In Acht, landscape and local history thus go hand in hand.
St. Hubertus and the village’s history
Today’s St. Hubertus Chapel was built in 1826 and stands in a central location in Acht, at the corner of Hauptstraße and Am Kirchweg. St. Hubertus is the local patron and principal saint of the small village chapel. Figures from the former chapel have been preserved, including St. Hubertus as a bishop, as well as two bells. A wayside cross dating from 1631 is also part of Acht’s cultural heritage. Families can explore the local connections in several steps: from the name Achterbach to the chapel’s patron saint and the preserved figures and bells. The dates 1826 and 1631 also bring different historical periods into focus.
Hiking and group stays
If you’d like to combine your stay with hiking, you can include the Wanderather Trail in your plans: it includes the Welschenbach–Acht section. Check trail conditions before setting out. The chapel and trail section offer different highlights—local history here, hiking there. This can help you choose the focus of your stay.
HausAcht is available for hiking groups and can accommodate up to 35 guests. The accommodation has ten parking spaces for cars, including space for a coach. Check availability before booking.
Culture in the wider destination of Mayen-Koblenz
In the wider destination of Mayen-Koblenz, other places add to the range of historical and natural history themes. In Mayen, Genovevaburg Castle was built in 1280 by Heinrich von Finstingen, Archbishop of Trier; it is one of the city’s landmarks. In Mendig, the Lava-Dome is the German Volcano Museum. Medieval architecture and volcanology thus offer contrasting interests.
Sayner Hütte offers another way to explore history: it is an anchor point on the European Route of Industrial Heritage and the only monument in Rhineland-Palatinate to receive this distinction. Following restoration work, modern exhibitions and multimedia presentations invite visitors to explore; guided tours and creative workshops are also on offer. Sayn Abbey reveals another historical period: it was founded around 1200, and its abbey church was consecrated in 1202. The exterior paintings dating from around 1255 are considered the best-preserved examples of their kind from the High Middle Ages in Germany.
For outdoor activities in the wider destination, the 33-kilometer Vulkanpark cycle path runs from Mayen via Mendig, Kretz, and Plaidt to Andernach. It connects numerous attractions in the Volcano Park along a relaxed, family-friendly route. Mayen-Koblenz therefore offers both cultural attractions and a cycling route, while Acht has its own points of interest: its location in the Achterbach valley, the chapel, and the named section of the hiking trail.
