Kobern-Gondorf: Castles, Wine and Hiking Trails
Accommodation in Kobern-Gondorf
In Kobern-Gondorf, striking scenery, castle history and winegrowing meet trails that take very different amounts of time. Koberner Schlossberg rises above the Moselle; viewpoints, historic walks and longer hikes offer different ways to discover the area. You can focus your stay more on culture and history, or set aside more time for an extended tour.
Schlossberg, Castles and Views of the Moselle
Koberner Schlossberg rises 130 metres above the Moselle, between the deeply incised side valleys of the Hohesteinsbach and Eiligbach streams. This prominent mountain spur is distinguished by a variety of warmth-loving plant and animal species.
The history of fortification can also be seen in specific structures: since around 1150, the defensive tower has reinforced the Kobern castles’ fortifications on the village side. Around 1190, Gerlach I of Isenburg and Cobern had the Lower Castle built on Roman foundations as a state-of-the-art defensive structure.
A narrow path above the church leads in two minutes to the rocky platform in front of the defensive and bell tower. From there, you can enjoy views over Kobern and the Moselle. The Stations of the Cross from Kobern up to the castles depicts the Passion of Jesus at 14 stations. The stations are designed like small chapels made of lava stone; the path through the vineyards was built in 1867.
The Three Kings Chapel is located in the cemetery in Kobern. Well-preserved medieval frescoes adorn its choir. The central work of art is believed to depict the Adoration of the Magi at the Nativity, created around 1420.
Circular Walks and Longer Hikes
The cultural and historical Tatzelwurm Trail is a 7.4-kilometre circular route through varied terrain. Three additional via ferrata routes along the trail shorten and alter the main route. Because of their higher level of difficulty, they are intended for experienced hikers who are sure-footed, have no fear of heights and wear sturdy footwear. Check the conditions before setting out.
The Kobern Historic Village Walk offers three routes of different lengths, with 15 marked points of interest. The extended route takes up to two hours and covers the years 800 to 1600 AD. Public guided tours take place every Saturday at 2 pm from April to October; check the latest dates before making plans.
For a longer tour, the 17-kilometre Mosel-Traumpfad Koberner Burgpfad starts at the Old Rectory in Kobern. The route has 500 metres of elevation gain and takes around five to seven hours. One section passes through the vineyards of Kobern. The difference in time required is clear: the extended village walk takes up to two hours, while the Burgpfad takes around five to seven.
Museums and Winegrowing in Gondorf
The Gondorf Local History Museum opens seasonally on weekends from May to October, together with the Wine Museum. Check in advance whether your visit falls on an opening weekend. At the local history museum, you can see historic electrical appliances and faithfully furnished rooms, including a classroom, hair salon, sewing room, cobbler’s workshop and music room.
The Historic Wine Museum of Gondorf is located in von der Leyen Castle in the district of Gondorf. The castle stands directly beside the Moselle and is the only moated castle on the Moselle. Knowledgeable members of the Gondorf Cultural and Local History Association show authentic equipment in the Wine Museum and explain the long-standing art of winegrowing. Wine tastings are available on request; arrange the details in advance.
Guided tours at the Goloring are held throughout the year, covering the site’s construction history and Celtic ways of life. If you would like to plan a tour, confirm current dates and arrangements with the organizer.
