A special discovery trail on a trip to Bendorf leads to the district of Sayn. Here, you can encounter industrial heritage, palace history, parkland and traces of Roman times. Sayn Ironworks, Palace Park, the castle and the abbey each offer something different. When planning your day, you can choose between exhibitions and historic buildings, nature watching and guided activities.

Industrial history at Sayn Ironworks

Sayn Ironworks is an anchor point on the European Route of Industrial Heritage (ERIH) and is considered the only monument in Rhineland-Palatinate to receive this distinction. Following careful restoration, it offers modern exhibitions and multimedia presentations. The accessible tour of the ironworks grounds starts at the visitor centre in the former machine factory, built in 1909. A visit here therefore combines the history of the site with an exhibition experience and a tour whose starting point is clearly marked.

Palace Park, gardens and wildlife watching

Sayn Palace Park was laid out between 1840 and 1850 in the style of an English landscape garden. The park features a palace pond with a fountain, a pond bridge with a distinctive rustic wood railing, winding paths, numerous benches and secluded quiet spots. Its many features provide more than just a single focal point: water, the bridge and paths shape the scene, while the benches and quiet spots also offer places to take a break.

Attentive visitors may spot rare bat species, insects and squirrels, as well as numerous birds such as the kingfisher, in Palace Park. Many waterbirds can be seen on the palace pond and make good subjects for photographs; sightings are not guaranteed. In the Butterfly Garden, alongside exotic butterflies, you can find button quail, turtles, tropical finches and Japanese koi. The wildlife in the park therefore offers different sights from the variety of animals in the garden.

A ticket to the Butterfly Garden also gives you the option of visiting the New Museum in Sayn Palace, directly next door. Check the ticket terms in advance if you would like to visit both attractions.

The castle, abbey and Roman history

The 800-year-old ancestral castle of the Princes of Sayn-Wittgenstein-Sayn sits high above Sayn, near Bendorf on the Rhine. From there, you can enjoy panoramic views of the Westerwald heights, the Rhine plain and the volcanic hills of the Eifel. Sayn Abbey adds another historic site: it was founded around 1200, and its abbey church was consecrated in 1202. Public guided tours take place regularly; the Förderkreis Abtei Sayn (Friends of Sayn Abbey) is the point of contact for tours of the abbey. Check the dates in advance.

On Pulverberg in Bendorf-Sayn, a Limes experience area features a listed reconstruction of a Roman watchtower dating from 1912, as well as an earthwork and palisades. At the Roman tower, trained Limes Cicerones offer theatrical guided tours and hikes exploring the Limes and Roman history for all age groups. Tour availability may vary, so check before your visit.

Trails and travel-planning information

From the Butterfly Garden and Sayn Palace, the castle ruins of Burg Sayn can be reached on foot in about 15 minutes via the premium hiking trails Rheinsteig, Saynsteig and Sayner Aussichten. This approximate travel time and the named trails provide a specific reference point when planning a hiking day; check trail conditions locally. This makes hiking a distinct option alongside exploring the park and local culture.

Since 2020, the tourist information office has been located in the visitor centre at Sayn Ironworks. It can help you plan and organise holiday trips and excursions to Bendorf and the surrounding area. This lets you choose activities to suit your interests without trying to fit every stop into the same day.
