Discover Sayn’s cultural park and hiking trails
Accommodation in Sayn
In Sayn, industrial and aristocratic heritage meet hiking trails through woodland and to rocky outcrops. The cultural park brings together these different sides of the town. Visitor attractions include the Sayner Hütte, Sayn Castle with the New Museum, the Butterfly Garden, the Princely Castle Park, Sayn Castle ruins, Sayn Abbey, Hein’s Mill, the Limes Roman Tower and the Sayn climbing forest. You can tailor your stay to culture and history or to hiking and landscapes.
Castle history and culture in Sayn
Sayn Castle houses the New Museum. It presents aspects of the history and private life of the Sayn-Wittgenstein-Sayn family; the museum also includes a richly coloured chapel. A ticket to the Butterfly Garden may also grant access to the New Museum right next door. Check the ticket arrangements before your trip.
Two hiking trails, different highlights
The Saynsteig is a long-distance hiking trail through shady woodland and along natural paths. It leads to rocky cliffs and offers views towards the Rhine Valley and the Eifel. The trail combines nature experiences with striking landscapes. Check local trail conditions before planning your hike.
The Sayner Aussichten passes Sayn Castle ruins, Sayn Castle and Sayn Abbey before leading into the Brexbach Valley and crossing the Pulverberg. The difference matters when choosing a route: the Saynsteig focuses on woodland, rocks and views, while the Sayner Aussichten takes in the cultural sites listed along the way and continues into the valley.
Cultural heritage and landscapes in Bendorf
In Bendorf, Sayn Castle Park was laid out between 1840 and 1850 in the style of an English landscape garden. The park features a castle pond with a fountain, a pond bridge with a distinctive rustic wooden railing, winding paths, numerous benches and secluded quiet spots. As part of the wider destination of Bendorf, the park adds a scenic highlight alongside the historical sights.
The 800-year-old ancestral castle of the Princes of Sayn-Wittgenstein-Sayn towers above Sayn, near Bendorf on the Rhine. From there, you can enjoy panoramic views over the Westerwald heights, the Rhine Plain and the volcanic mountains of the Eifel. Sayn Abbey also has a long history: it was founded around 1200, and its abbey church was consecrated in 1202.
In Bendorf, the Sayner Hütte is an anchor point on the European Route of Industrial Heritage (ERIH) and is considered the only monument in Rhineland-Palatinate to hold this distinction. Following careful restoration, it offers modern exhibitions and multimedia presentations; their content may change. The accessible tour of the ironworks site begins at the visitor centre in the former machine factory of the Sayner Hütte, which dates from 1909.
On the Pulverberg in Bendorf-Sayn is a Limes experience area with a listed reconstruction of a Roman watchtower dating from 1912, as well as an earth rampart and palisades. At the Roman Tower, trained Limes Cicerones offer theatrical tours and hikes for all ages about the Limes and Roman history. Guide availability may vary, so check dates in advance.
Wildlife also adds to the experiences in the wider destination of Bendorf: alongside exotic butterflies, the Butterfly Garden is home to button quail, tortoises, tropical finches and Japanese koi. Since 2020, the Tourist Information Centre has been located in the Sayner Hütte visitor centre and can help plan and organise holidays and day trips to Bendorf and the surrounding area.
Choose the right focus for your stay
This way, you can make your choice based on your own plans instead of combining different outings into a single fixed itinerary.
