Einig is a small village with no through traffic, whose history is brought into focus by St. Luzia and early records of its name. The village was first mentioned in 1103 under the name Inika; a chapel in Einig is documented in 1680. The present-day Church of St. Luzia was built in 1909. The chapel’s Late Gothic choir at Kirchstraße 4 was retained as a sacristy when the new church was built. The village’s history thus brings together an early mention of its name, a historical record of a chapel, and a church built in the early 20th century. For architecture enthusiasts, the choir section that remains in use is a particularly striking detail: part of the older chapel was preserved and given a different function as a sacristy.

Village character and getting here

More cultural and visitor experiences in Mayen-Koblenz

The wider destination of Mayen-Koblenz offers further distinctive architectural and cultural histories. Genovevaburg Castle was built in 1280 by Heinrich von Finstingen, Archbishop of Trier, and is one of Mayen’s landmarks. Sayn Abbey was founded around 1200, and its abbey church was consecrated in 1202. Its exterior paintings, dating from around 1255, are considered the best-preserved examples in Germany from the High Middle Ages. These sites offer contrasting highlights: the castle, abbey, and St. Luzia each tell a distinct story of architecture and give culturally minded travellers a range of historical themes to explore.

Sayner Hütte adds industrial heritage to this selection. It is an anchor point on the European Route of Industrial Heritage and the only monument in Rhineland-Palatinate to receive this distinction. Following restoration, its modern exhibitions and multimedia displays invite visitors to explore; guided tours and creative workshops are also available. Hein’s Mill offers another perspective on craftsmanship: it is the only one of the former 20 mills in Bendorf and the surrounding area that is still fully operational. The mill museum explains the stages of the milling process and the importance of the milling trade in the region.

Visitors who appreciate landscaped grounds as well as buildings will find a particular focus at Sayn Palace Park. The park was designed as an English landscape garden from 1840 to 1850 on behalf of Prince Ludwig Adolf Friedrich zu Sayn-Wittgenstein-Sayn; the architect was Carl Friedrich Thelemann. Features include a palace pond with a water fountain, winding paths, numerous benches, and secluded quiet spots. For family trips, the New Museum Schloss Sayn offers another hands-on discovery: in the Children’s Kingdom, visitors can try on historical costumes. The Geyser Museum, meanwhile, explains in five exhibition areas how the world’s tallest cold-water geyser works.

For cyclists, the regional routes described here differ in their course and features. The 33-kilometre Vulkanpark Cycle Route runs from Mayen via Mendig, Kretz, and Plaidt to Andernach, connecting numerous attractions in the Volcano Park; the route is described as relaxed and family-friendly. The Maifeld Cycle Route follows the Nettetal valley along a disused railway line from Münstermaifeld via Polch to Mayen. This offers two different options for planning: a route with a specified distance and named intermediate stops, and a ride along a former railway line.

As a wider destination, Mayen-Koblenz offers more to explore, from architectural and industrial heritage to parks and cycle routes. The perspective you would like to focus on can help determine the right starting point for your search.
