Winningen between vineyard terraces and local history
Accommodation in Winningen
Steep vineyard terraces, dry-stone walls and a village centre with half-timbered houses give Winningen a distinctive blend of landscape and architectural history. Hiking trails, wine culture and historical landmarks add further highlights. You can tailor your stay according to whether you mainly want to explore the outdoors, discover wine-related offerings or learn about local history.
Hiking trails and vineyard landscape
Winningen is a stop on several long-distance hiking trails, including the Moselsteig and the Rhein-Burgen-Weg. The Traumpfädchen Moseltraum circular hiking trail leads from the Weilsborn spring along small paths, past old vineyard walls, and steeply uphill to the Domgartenhütte. Bear the steep climb in mind when planning this hike into your day.
The five Winningen wine trails run around Winningen, follow the vineyard sites and showcase the wine-growing cultural landscape. The “Winninger Weinbergterrassen” landmark can be accessed freely via these trails. Check trail conditions before setting out and local updates before departure.
A cycling route also takes in the wine-growing landscape: it starts in Winningen and runs at the foot of the steep slopes where terraced vineyards have been cultivated for centuries. This offers a choice of different perspectives: the Traumpfädchen trail climbs steeply to the Domgartenhütte, while the cycling route runs at the foot of the steep slopes.
Terraces with a distinctive structure
Around Winningen, 130 relieving arches and 600 scissor stairways are built into the vineyard terrace walls. The terraces comprise up to 29 levels stacked above one another; many kilometres of dry-stone walls can be found in the Uhlen, Hamm, Röttgen and Brückstück vineyard sites. These architectural features shape the wine-growing cultural landscape and give the slopes a layered structure.
The vineyard terraces around Winningen also provide a habitat for the Apollo butterfly and the eagle owl. Nature enthusiasts will find this perspective on the landscape alongside the wine trails: its walls and terraces are connected not only with viticulture, but also serve as a habitat for the two species mentioned.
Wine, culture and local history
The vinotheque in Winningen’s hospital building offers the opportunity to taste and buy around 40 wines and sparkling wines from independent Winningen wineries. Opening hours vary by season; check them before your visit. The wine-related range also includes products such as spirits and books about wine. If you are looking for these in particular, check availability in advance. In 1994, the municipality of Winningen adapted the hospital building for wine, culture and information.
The Winningen Museum is a cultural history museum housed in a listed building erected by Claudius von Lassaulx in 1833. In the historic village centre, the Weinhex fountain, surrounded by a group of half-timbered houses, commemorates the witch trials of the 17th century. The well-preserved Horntor is a reminder of the town’s former six gates.
Other historic buildings reflect different periods and styles. The courtyard of the Barons von Heddesdorff in Winningen dates from the 16th century. The Protestant church has a Romanesque tower, as well as Late Romanesque features in the nave and the small southern chancel. The historic village centre also includes the Weinhof at Moselufer 5: its wine cellar dates from 1897, and the building has two turreted towers.
The Winningen Mosel Festival is also part of the wine tradition and is described as Germany’s oldest wine festival. If attending a festival is important to your trip, check the current event dates.
