Discover Waldbreitbach: Nativity Scenes, Mills and Churches
Accommodation in Waldbreitbach
Waldbreitbach combines architectural and milling history with a rich nativity scene tradition and trails through forests, meadows and fields. These themes offer different ways to shape your trip: you can explore historical landmarks, focus on the Christmas season or set aside time for outdoor excursions.
Churches, Chapel and Klosterberg
The Catholic parish church of the Assumption of Mary in Waldbreitbach was founded by the Teutonic Order in the 13th century. Only the tower from that period remains. On the upper floor, its twin arcades are divided by Ionic columns. Since 1983, the tower has been designated a protected cultural monument. Its architecture and protected status offer specific starting points for exploring the town’s history.
At the edge of town in the direction of Hausen, on the banks of the Wied, stands the Chapel of the Cross. Pastor Frederici built it in 1694; it is used for church services. A pilgrimage trail in the Wied valley begins at St. Marienhaus on Klosterberg, home to the Waldbreitbach Franciscan Sisters. In summer, the Klosterberg terraces and the herb and Bible garden invite visitors to take a break or join a guided tour. The church building, pilgrimage trail and garden each offer a distinct focus for a cultural or spiritually oriented stay.
Oil Mill and Craftsmanship
The oil mill on the Wied received its first licence in 1676. Its oak drive mechanism for the edge runner mill dates from the rebuilding in 1700. It is the oldest surviving oil mill of this type in the Rhineland. In a restored oil mill, visitors are shown how the mill works. This puts the milling technology, as well as the history of the building, in focus.
Another example of local craft traditions is the craft museum on the Kleine Wäller Wied-Runde. It is housed in a half-timbered building more than 300 years old. The building itself thus brings the history of craftsmanship together with a historic architectural style.
Nativity Scenes and Christmas Village
Since 1989, the large natural-root nativity scene has been set up in the parish church of the Assumption of Mary. In 1998, it was entered in the Guinness Book of Records as the largest natural-root nativity scene. In addition, Waldbreitbach has been transformed into a Christmas village for more than 30 years: the entire town is decorated with Christmas attractions and numerous nativity scenes. The individual nativity scene in the church and the decorations throughout the town reveal two different sides of this tradition. Specific dates vary from year to year; check them before planning your trip.
The nativity scene museum on the Kleine Wäller Wied-Runde is another of Waldbreitbach’s cultural attractions. It displays 2,500 nativity scenes from around the world. It offers a way to compare the local Christmas nativity tradition with scenes from different countries.
Trails, Water and Activity
The Wäller Tour W3 follows varied trails through forests, meadows and fields south and west of Waldbreitbach. Right by the trail is a Kneipp pool fed by an iron-rich mountain spring from a former ore mine tunnel. On Marktstraße, there is a free car park with public toilets for the Wäller Tour W3. Check these practical details again before travelling; temporary diversions may also affect the route.
The Kleine Wäller Wied-Runde offers further planning options: in addition to the craft and nativity scene museums, rowing boats and pedal boats are available at a boat rental facility. If you plan to take a boat trip, check in advance whether boats are available. The two routes therefore offer different experiences: the Wäller Tour W3 focuses on the landscape and Kneipp pool, while the Kleine Wäller Wied-Runde combines cultural stops with boating.
Planning Your Stay
If you are visiting for the nativity scene tradition, take the varying event dates into account. For a culture-focused stay, the history of the churches and mills can take centre stage; for time outdoors, the two routes offer different themes. Plan according to which of these experiences you actually want to include in your stay.
