Dommershausen between the Baybach and Lützbachtal valleys
Accommodation in Dommershausen
Dommershausen stretches along a ridge between the valleys of the Baybach and Lützbach. Alongside this landscape, hiking, cycling and local history offer different interests for visitors. The church was built in 1759 and is considered a historic landmark of the village. You can plan your stay around outdoor activities, culture or a mix of both.
Hiking between gorge and panoramic views
The Baybachklamm Dream Loop is a 10.46-kilometre circular trail with 413 metres of ascent and descent. It passes through a gorge cut deep into Hunsrück slate and includes sections secured with ropes. The route length, elevation profile and trail conditions each provide different points of reference for planning your hike. Check the route profile again before setting out.
In good visibility, you can see Burg Waldeck near Heyweiler. Shortly before the end of the hike, the high viewpoint on the Barreterlay cliff edge is another highlight. The route thus combines a possible view of the castle with another viewpoint towards the end of the hike.
The Hunsrück-Mittelrhein hiking area has a dense network of certified premium trails of varying lengths and difficulty levels. You can also explore the Ehrbach and Baybach valleys on foot in the direction of the Moselle. The Saar-Hunsrück-Steig is on a different scale: it runs for 410 kilometres over 27 stages from the Moselle through Saarland and the Hunsrück to the Rhine.
Church, museum and archive
The Pies Museum and Archive preserves regional and family-history documents, deeds, maps and photographs. Rotating exhibitions are open to the public. Different forms of historical record are therefore at the centre: written documents, maps and images are represented alongside the changing exhibitions.
Since 1992, the Vorderhunsrück Museum/Pies Archive and a library for personal and local history have been housed in a historic rectory dating from 1837/38. The chapel in Dorweileralso tells the story of the area: it is a Gothic hall church dedicated to Saint Willibrord and was first mentioned in writing in 1569.
Cycling and the wider travel region
The Hunsrück-Mosel Cycle Route passes through Sabershausen, a district of the municipality of Dommershausen. This gives you a specific cycling route to consider when planning, in addition to the hiking options.
The wider Rhein-Hunsrück travel destination opens up a larger landscape. The Rhein-Hunsrück district includes extensive areas of the Hunsrück, part of the Rhenish Slate Mountains, as well as the left bank of the Upper Middle Rhine Valley. The district also includes large parts of the Hunsrück plateau and quartzite ridges to the south, such as the Soonwald; in the Middle Rhine Valley, the Rhine also forms the district’s eastern boundary.
Parts of the Hunsrück-Mittelrhein collective municipality and the town of Boppard are part of the Upper Middle Rhine Valley UNESCO World Heritage Site, recognised in 2002. The Rhein-Hunsrück district has numerous hiking trails, including the certified Soonwaldsteig premium hiking trail, as well as extensive, well-developed and signposted cycling routes along the Rhine and through the Hunsrück. Regional specialities and Middle Rhine wine from high-quality vineyards round out this regional picture.
