The Rhein-Hunsrück district covers large areas of the Hunsrück, part of the Rhenish Slate Mountains, as well as the left bank of the Upper Middle Rhine Valley. Alongside the Hunsrück plateau are extensive parts of the quartzite ridges to the south, including the Soonwald. In the Middle Rhine Valley, the Rhine also forms the district’s eastern boundary. This landscape can help you plan your trip: first consider whether you mainly want to explore the high ridges and hiking trails, the cycling routes or the culture along the Rhine.

Landscape and history in focus

Parts of the collective municipality of Hunsrück-Mittelrhein and the town of Boppard in the Rhein-Hunsrück district are part of the Upper Middle Rhine Valley UNESCO World Heritage Site, which was recognised in 2002. Boppard is home to the Electoral Castle, a medieval fortification right on the banks of the Rhine. The combination of landscape and historic architecture gives the Middle Rhine Valley its own distinctive cultural perspective.

Kastellaun also offers a window into regional history: the House of Regional History traces the region’s development from the Middle Ages to the Cold War. The displays feature themed exhibitions, text panels and original documents. Since 25 April 2026, the museum has been open Thursdays and Fridays from 12:00 to 17:00, and Saturdays, Sundays and public holidays from 11:00 to 17:00. Check the opening times again before your trip.

Hiking trails and the Geierlay

The Rhein-Hunsrück district has numerous hiking trails, including the certified Soonwaldsteig premium hiking trail. A distinctive landmark to consider when planning your route is the Geierlay suspension bridge between Mörsdorf and Sosberg: it is 360 metres long and 100 metres high. Several circular trails, ranging from 3 to 14 kilometres, run around the bridge; the visitor centre in Mörsdorf is both the starting point and the finish. The Geierlay dream loop is 6.6 kilometres long and has a moderate difficulty rating. When choosing a route, you can therefore take both its length and—in the case of this dream loop—its stated difficulty into account.

The Saar-Hunsrück-Steig offers a different scale. It runs through the Hunsrück, via Kastellaun, to the Rhine at Boppard and covers 410 kilometres in 27 stages. The circular trails at the Geierlay and this long-distance hiking trail differ considerably in scope: their specific lengths can help you tailor your plans to the distance you want to cover. For individual trails, it is worth checking current conditions before setting out.

Cycling and regional specialities

The district has extensive, well-developed and signposted cycle paths along the Rhine and through the Hunsrück. For the 2026 cycling season, the RadBus 629 service—the RadBus Hunsrück-Mosel—supports trips on the Schinderhannes cycle route between Kastellaun and Emmelshausen, as well as on the Schinderhannes-Untermosel cycle route between Emmelshausen and the Moselle. As this service information applies to the 2026 season, check the timetable before travelling.

Regional specialities and Middle Rhine wines from high-quality vineyards are among the local delights. This means regional produce can be part of your trip planning alongside hiking and cycling. Deciding which experiences to prioritise can help you choose the right focus for your stay.

Choose accommodation based on your travel plans

When looking for accommodation, first consider whether hiking trails, cycling routes, the museum or the culture along the Rhine waterfront will shape your trip. Then choose a location based on the experiences that matter most to you, and check the location of any specific accommodation option. That way, your search starts with the kind of trip you want, rather than a general idea of what your stay should offer.
