Harthausen combines historic sites with an active way to explore the surrounding area: the cultural trail leads to significant buildings and places, while a family adventure trail starts at the forest playground. There are also places of remembrance, such as the Historic Tobacco Barn and St. John the Baptist Parish Church. This gives you a choice of different travel interests, from local history and culture to time outdoors.

A circular trail through local history

The Harthausen Cultural Trail is a circular route with 20 stops at historically significant buildings and places. You can start at any point. Information boards are supplemented by QR codes providing facts and details about each location. This lets you explore the stops on site and find out more about individual points of interest digitally.

St. John the Baptist Parish Church was first mentioned in 1359. The present building was constructed between 1872 and 1874 in the Maximilian style and preserves a late Gothic Pietà from the predecessor church, dating from 1511. Archaeological finds from the Stone Age, the Urnfield period, the La Tène period and the Roman period also form part of the history of Harthausen and its surroundings. A deed of foundation dated 1230 for Heilsbruck Monastery is associated with the Mühlwieshecke area near Harthausen. Cistercian nuns settled at the monastery in 1232; in 1262, it was transferred to Edenkoben.

Tobacco history as a distinctive cultural feature

Harthausen is considered a traditional tobacco-growing village, and its agricultural heritage is reflected in the Tobacco Village Festival. The Historic Tobacco Barn was built in 1852. Following extensive renovation, it became a community meeting place in 1990. Insights into the tobacco-growing tradition thus complement the village’s architectural and church history. If you would like to include the Tobacco Village Festival in your travel plans, check the event dates in advance.

Playground, family trail and nature

The forest playground is Harthausen’s largest playground and is located directly behind Heilsbruckhalle. A community initiative created it as a nature-oriented playground in 2009. It was renovated during another community initiative in 2013; a forest classroom and a letterbox tour through the Harthausen forest were also added. The family adventure trail starts at the forest playground. At the starting point of the short trail, there is also a barefoot sensory circle. If you plan to visit these attractions, check the latest information about the playground and trail beforehand.

The Woogwiesen are another way to connect with nature: this nature reserve covers around 13 hectares in parts of the Harthausen and Dudenhofen districts. Historic sites, a family trail and a named nature reserve therefore offer different ways to shape your trip.
