Gleisweiler lies at the transition between the eastern Palatinate Forest and the wine-growing areas of the Southern Wine Route. Its south-easterly aspect and the hills to the west, which provide shelter, create a notably mild climate with a Mediterranean feel. Almonds, figs, lemons, kiwis and sweet chestnuts grow in and around the village. Forest and vineyard landscapes, local history and regional food culture come together in one destination, with discoveries to be made both outdoors and in the village itself.

Hiking trails, views and the forest shower

Signposted hiking trails start and finish in Gleisweiler; destinations include the pilgrimage church of St. Anna. The Trifelsblickweg connects the village with the TrifelsblickhĂĽtte and the weather cross on Teufelsberg. This gives you a range of landmarks to choose from when planning a hike: a pilgrimage church in one direction, a hut and weather cross in the other.

The historic village center overlooks the Rhine plain and is connected to an extensive network of hiking trails, with huts and the historic forest shower. The forest shower is a cold-water shower facility with water temperatures of 8 to 12 °C. It was built in 1848 in the Hainbach valley for cold-water treatments associated with the Bad Gleisweiler cold-water sanatorium. The site thus brings together a specific hiking tradition and the history of water treatments.

Historic village character and culture

Gleisweiler’s historic village center is characterized by largely intact historic buildings and picturesque streets. Most of the houses date from the 16th to the 18th centuries. The Catholic Church of St. Stephanus also offers a distinctive cultural landmark: it is considered an example of medieval architecture in the Palatinate and is part of the European project Sternenweg – Chemin des Étoiles.

A building dating from the 18th century is now a venue for 20th- and 21st-century art, design and photography. Alongside the older buildings, it also provides a setting for works from more recent centuries. The contrast between local history, church architecture and art can give your stay a variety of cultural highlights.

Paper-making history and hands-on crafts

The Paper Museum is devoted to the history of paper and traditional paper-making, tracing its roots to a paper mill established in Gleisweiler in 1818. On the first Sunday of each month, visitors can make paper themselves using traditional methods. Check dates and seasonal opening arrangements before your trip. Making your own paper adds a hands-on activity to the historical perspective and brings the craft to life.

Winegrowing, wine tavern and Wine & Art

Winegrowing in Gleisweiler dates back at least to 1770; the local vineyard site is called “Hölle.” At the F. G. Kost winery, typical Palatinate grape varieties have been cultivated for several generations. The winery’s wine tavern serves Saumagen and liver dumplings with wine, offering a taste of regional food culture.

Wine & Art also brings together local winegrowing and culture. The festival is traditionally held on the first weekend in August; check the exact dates for the year you plan to travel. An annual vernissage at the Kurpfälzischer Zehnthof is part of the program. During the festival, winery courtyards open their doors and offer food alongside local wine. Participating wineries and the dishes on offer vary from year to year.
