Southern Wine Route: Castles, Nature Trails and Cycling Tours

The Southern Wine Route borders the Palatinate Forest Biosphere Reserve and Nature Park and offers ideas for a wide variety of days out: castles, museums, adventure trails and cycling options. You can combine nature and culture, or focus on a single castle visit, a circuit with themed stops or longer tours.

Nature and adventure trails

At Silz Lake, the Climate and Nature Adventure Trail consists of two circular routes of different lengths. Topics include forests, biodiversity, drinking water supply and water retention. The different lengths let you choose between two circuits; the trails focus on nature and water management.

Two other trails differ in length and format. The Trifels Adventure Trail is an easy 3.6-kilometre route with 18 play and learning stations. The Keschde Adventure Trail is a 6.1-kilometre circular route around Föhrlenberg that is suitable for strollers and focuses on the Palatinate sweet chestnut. This gives you the choice of a shorter, easy route with stops or a longer circuit themed around sweet chestnuts. Seasonal conditions may affect access to the Keschde Adventure Trail.

Castles, history and hands-on culture

Landeck Castle has a 25-metre-high viewing platform. From there, the view extends across the Vorderpfalz towards the Odenwald and Black Forest; visibility depends on the weather. Replicas of the Imperial Regalia are on display at Trifels Imperial Castle. Madenburg Castle has a permanent exhibition on its origins.

The Museum unter dem Trifels in Annweiler am Trifels covers the history of the town, Trifels Castle and the Hohenstaufen dynasty, as well as the development of the landscape in the Palatinate Forest. The paper museum in Gleisweiler offers a different kind of experience: visitors can make their own paper. This is possible on opening days or by arrangement; check the current options before setting out. The monastery trail at Eußerthal Abbey Church explores the history of the former Cistercian monastery.

The cultural attractions offer different highlights: a view across the Vorderpfalz, replicas of the Imperial Regalia, exhibitions and a hands-on paper-making activity. Cycling routes, tours and wildlife park

The “Cycling in the Southern Palatinate” map covers 27 signposted cycle paths and circular tours from the Rhine across the Southern Wine Route to the Palatinate Forest. Maps and route signage may be updated, so check the latest information before setting out on a specific tour. The Castle Tour is listed as a 42.4-kilometre cycling circuit. The distance may change if the route is revised.

Another touring option is the challenging Palatinate Hut Tour: it is 19 kilometres long and visits five huts serving regional specialities. The route and hut availability may vary seasonally. The difference is clear for planning: the Castle Tour is listed as a cycling circuit, while the Palatinate Hut Tour offers a different focus, with five huts and regional specialities.

Silz Wildlife and Hiking Park covers more than 100 hectares and is home to 400 animals from 15 European species. The park also has a large adventure playground. Animal numbers and park facilities may change over time. A visit to the park adds another focus to the choice of castle, museum and trail experiences.
