Heuchelheim-Klingen: Wine, Streamside Paths and History
Accommodation in Heuchelheim-Klingen
Vineyard rows, willows lining the streams, poplars and alders, small apple orchards and grazing animals shape the landscape of Heuchelheim-Klingen; the Palatinate Forest lies on the horizon. The vineyards and the two local streams lend walks different character: shady waterside paths here, panoramic views among gently rolling vines there. When choosing accommodation, you can therefore ask yourself whether nature trails, wine or local history should shape your stay.
Streamside Paths and Vineyard Views
On foot, you can follow shady paths along one of the two local streams. Local options also include hiking trails and a combined wine and stream nature trail. Guided walks through gently rolling vineyards offer panoramic views and insights into winegrowing, the landscape and history. These bring together two distinct perspectives: shade accompanies you along the stream, while the guided vineyard walks focus on views and knowledge about winegrowing.
Churches and Local History
In Klingen stands the Protestant Church of St. George, whose present form took shape around 1500 in the Late Gothic style. Its organ is considered the oldest still playable organ in the Palatinate, although experts disagree about its exact age. The Protestant Church of St. Oswald and the Renaissance town hall with arcades are among the sights in Heuchelheim. St. George’s Church is generally open all day on Sundays in summer; a key for visits is available from the Scheib family. As this seasonal arrangement may change, check locally in advance. Klingen also has a small, shady playground. If it matters to your plans, check the facility in person before relying on it.
Wine and Festival Traditions
The wine panorama includes wine tastings and delicacies in the Herrenpfad vineyard area. Check the current program before your visit. At the Herbschdwächelfeschd, guests enjoy Rebknorzespieß and hearty dishes with new wine in vintners’ wagons. Dates and the program may vary from year to year, so find out in advance about the edition you plan to attend. One event focuses on wine tastings in the vineyard area, the other on hearty festival dishes served in vintners’ wagons.
In the wider Southern Wine Route destination
The wider Southern Wine Route destination also offers more themes for longer trips. The Southern Wine Route borders the Palatinate Forest Nature Park Biosphere Reserve. At Landeck Castle, a 25-metre-high platform offers views across the Vorderpfalz towards the Odenwald and Black Forest when visibility is good; replicas of the Imperial Regalia are on display at Trifels Imperial Castle. The regional experience trails differ in length and subject: the easy TrifelsErlebnisWeg is 3.6 kilometres long and features 18 play and learning stations. The Keschde-Erlebnisweg is a 6.1-kilometre circular route around the Föhrlenberg that is suitable for pushchairs and is dedicated to the Palatinate sweet chestnut. At Silz Lake, the Climate and Nature Experience Trail offers two circular routes of different lengths; they cover forests, biodiversity, drinking water production and water retention.
