Eppenbrunn between the Palatinate Forest and the Northern Vosges

Eppenbrunn lies on the border between the Palatinate and Lorraine, where the Palatinate Forest Biosphere Reserve gives way to the Northern Vosges. The state-recognised climatic health resort offers nature and leisure ideas with a range of different focuses. Travel highlights include striking sandstone formations, trails along the German-French border and activities in the village. You can plan your stay around whether you mainly want to hike, discover traces of history or arrange activities to enjoy together.

Sandstone and trails along the border

The Altschlossfelsen is particularly striking: this sandstone reef is around 1.3 kilometres long and is considered the longest of its kind in the Palatinate. The ten-kilometre Altschlosspfad leads to the rock formation and is regarded as a family-friendly hiking trail along the German-French border. It also leads to the Quellbäche des Eppenbrunner Baches nature reserve in the Palatinate Forest Biosphere Reserve. One section of the Altschlosspfad is signposted as the Way of St. James and forms part of a medieval pilgrimage route.

The Eppenbrunn Border Trail offers another route option: the approximately twelve-kilometre circular trail leads from the Spießweiher to the Altschlossfelsen along the German-French border. When comparing the two routes, their different lengths provide a concrete point of reference for planning your hike. Another hiking idea is the Eulenfels Tour. It leads to a sandstone formation with views across the Palatinate Forest as far as Götzenbruck in France.

Rock motifs and leisure activities

The rock also evokes historical associations: the image of Diana carved into the stone recalls the passage of the Romans. In 1991, the Altschlossfelsen was listed as a valuable cultural monument. The striking sandstone formation thus brings together a cultural memory and a specific heritage designation.

The leisure activities in the village offer a different focus from the hiking trails. Eppenbrunn Leisure Park includes a playground, sports equipment and a Kneipp facility. The Eppenbrunn Adventure Golf Park has twelve holes. A local provider offers donkey hikes around Eppenbrunn with trained donkeys. The introduction covers leading, saddling and packing the donkeys, as well as handling the animals.

A wider perspective on the Südwestpfalz region

Across the wider Südwestpfalz region, the Palatinate Forest shapes the landscape. Well-maintained, signposted trails lead through dense forests, over gentle hills and past impressive red sandstone cliffs. For hiking enthusiasts, this offers an additional perspective on the region as a whole.

Find accommodation to suit your plans

If you are planning a trip with children, the Altschlosspfad, which is considered family-friendly, may be one point to consider. Then think about which location and facilities match your own requirements. This way, you can tailor your search to what you would like to do during your stay in Eppenbrunn, rather than relying on a general recommendation for the village.
