Pirmasens: Culture, Nature and Chocolate
Accommodation in Pirmasens
Experience Pirmasens through discoveries in museums, green spaces and active routes. The WAWI Chocolate World adds a sweet touch.
Culture, Experiments and Chocolate
With 160 hands-on stations, the interactive Dynamikum Science Center makes scientific topics tangible. The Forum Alte Post puts Heinrich Bürkel and Hugo Ball at the heart of dedicated exhibitions, alongside temporary exhibitions. The Museum in the Old Town Hall displays the Wald.Schloss.Schuh collection and Elisabeth Emmler’s silhouette-cutting cabinet. The Westwall Museum is housed in the former Gerstfeldhöhe fortification in Niedersimten.
Chocolate is also one of Pirmasens’s discoveries: WAWI Chocolate World offers a view of production behind glass, a small museum, a café and direct sales. This glimpse of the manufacturing process offers a different focus from the museums’ exhibitions and collections.
Green Spaces with Different Features
The Old Cemetery is a six-hectare urban green space with historic tombstones, mature trees and nine works of art. At Eisweiher, areas for football, volleyball and badminton sit alongside landscaped grounds for strolling and relaxing. This offers a choice between sporting activities and a quieter time surrounded by greenery.
Strecktal Park has a 15-hole disc golf course and outdoor exhibits from the Dynamikum Science Center. The geology trail in Strecktal displays 25 rock samples from across Rhineland-Palatinate. You can check the condition of individual facilities before your visit.
Cycling and Hiking Trails
The Dynamikum Circular Route is a cycling loop of about 25 kilometres that starts at the Tourist Information Centre in Pirmasens. Along the way, information panels explain the history of the mill valleys and the Strecktal. The Tourist Information Centre rents out modern e-bikes; it is best to check availability before you arrive.
The Felsenwald, Hexenklamm and Teufelspfad routes in Pirmasens are considered premium trails certified by the German Hiking Institute. If the award is important to your choice, check the current certification status: certifications may be renewed or expire. Hexenklamm is a rocky gorge on the outskirts of Pirmasens. Eroded rock formations and small waterfalls define its scenery.
The Palatinate Way of St. James runs through Pirmasens along a connecting route of about 74 kilometres, linking its northern and southern branches. A pilgrim stamp point is located at the Pirmasens Tourist Information Centre in the Rheinberger building. If you plan to get the stamp, check visitor arrangements in advance. The key difference when choosing a route is that the cycling loop contrasts with a connecting route between the two branches of the Way of St. James.
Dining and Choosing Accommodation
Pirmasens is known for its wide-ranging dining scene, from Palatinate Forest huts to upscale restaurants. Let your interests guide your accommodation search. On the grounds of the Old Cemetery, the former mortuary now houses the Carolinensaal, where chamber concerts and lectures take place. Check the current programme for specific dates.
