Beuren (Hochwald): Forests, Trails and Building Culture
Accommodation in Beuren
Beuren (Hochwald) combines a forest-rich landscape with striking quartzite formations and historic buildings. The town is located in Saar-HunsrĂĽck Nature Park and offers various starting points for planning your trip: trails and viewpoints for days outdoors, as well as architectural history and a place to relax. Which of these aspects you would like to explore may also influence your choice of accommodation.
Forests, Quartzite and Trails
Forests, fields and valleys shape the landscape around Beuren, along with natural and cultural monuments. Notable geological formations include the Prosterather Wacken, Hoher Stein and Graue Eltz. Their names give the landscape a distinct character and, alongside the open fields and valleys, offer further characteristic impressions. Hohe Wurzel is a hiking area and stands 669 meters high.
For a specific circular route, plan to take the Rockenburger Urwaldpfad: it is 11.7 kilometers long and starts and ends at the pond by the FischerhĂĽtte. The Holzhackerkreuz parking lot serves as a starting point for walks in the surrounding forests. From the Holzhackerkreuz viewpoint on the heights near Beuren, the view extends toward HunsrĂĽck-Hochwald National Park and Erbeskopf. Before setting out on an outdoor excursion, it is worth checking current trail conditions.
Two giant sequoias west of Beuren, at the intersection of the L152 and L148, are designated natural monuments. They were planted in 1871. Alongside the rocks and forests, they offer another striking landmark in the landscape.
Building Culture with Different Stories
St. Paulinus Parish Church was built between 1835 and 1837 to plans by Trier city architect Johann Baptist Bingler. Its style is predominantly Neoclassical. Some of the Neoclassical furnishings have been preserved, including the pulpit and confessionals. The church’s construction and furnishings make it a tangible example of the town’s architectural history.
A different type of house can be seen at the Prosterather Quereinhaus at BrunnenstraĂźe 2. The building dates from around 1840 and represents a historic Moselle-Franconian architectural style, with living and working areas combined in one long building. Together, the church and the Quereinhaus show two different sides of local building culture.
A Break by the Water
At Beuren’s recreation area, a freely accessible water-treading pool is located beside the Fischerhütte. It offers a place to relax; dogs are not allowed in the pool. The Fischerhütte itself is an excursion restaurant serving food, next to a fishing pond in Beuren. As food service and opening status may change, check the latest information before your visit.
Active and more restful options sit side by side: you can focus on the hiking area and circular trail, or combine your stay with local building culture and a break at the water-treading pool. Consider whether your days should be centered mainly on nature and activity, historic architectural styles, or a mix of both; this will help you choose the right place to stay.
More Places to Explore in the Wider Trier-Saarburg Destination
The wider Trier-Saarburg destination also includes independent places with different highlights. At Saarburg Castle, large sections of the surrounding walls and a residential tower have been preserved. Several viewing platforms and the tower offer panoramic views of the Saar Valley. In Tawern, the Roman roadside settlement of Tabernae is considered the origin of the town. It was established shortly before the turn of the era on the Roman main road from the Moselle via Metz to Rome.
Roman-themed attractions in Tawern include an authentic 1:75 scale model of the roadside settlement, displayed in the pavilion, and a large reconstructed temple complex in the forest. The free ARGO app lets you view the temple complex on site at its original size and as a 360-degree augmented reality display. The Tälchen-Tour is another regional route option: it starts and ends in Konz, is classified as a moderately difficult circular tour, is 37.28 kilometers long and is listed as taking about two hours and 45 minutes. Those wishing to explore other places in the wider Trier-Saarburg destination alongside Beuren’s forest and building culture can discover Roman history in Tawern and take the moderately difficult Tälchen-Tour from Konz.
