Cycling in the Saar-Obermosel region

The Saar-Obermosel region offers mostly flat cycling paths along the Moselle, Saar and Sauer rivers. They are suitable for leisurely rides, family outings and multi-day tours. This offers a different focus from the premium hiking trails through steep vineyards and gorges. Check route conditions and services locally before setting off.

Regional cuisine

The varied cuisine of the Saar-Obermosel region also includes traditional dishes that have been rediscovered. Culinary discoveries add a distinct regional theme to days spent outdoors. Individual restaurants and menus may change; if a particular dish is important to your plans, ask about the current selection in advance. In the wider Trier-Saarburg destination, fruit growers, fine fruit distillers, farmers, hoteliers and restaurateurs along the Viez Route provide information, regional recipes and experiences centered around Viez.

The Roman street settlement of Tabernae in Tawern is considered the origin of the town. It was established shortly before the turn of the era on the main Roman road from the Moselle via Metz to Rome. The pavilion houses an authentic 1:75-scale model; the large reconstructed temple complex is also located in the forest. The free ARGO app lets you view it on site at full size and as a 360-degree augmented reality experience.

Part of a cold-water pool about four meters high survives from the Roman imperial palace in Konz. The former palace terrace offers views of the Moselle and Saar rivers and the surrounding mountains.

A 2.5-kilometer Archaeological Adventure Trail is part of the Roman theater at Kastel-Staadt. The Kastel Rock Trail leads through an impressive red sandstone landscape with striking rock formations. Panoramic views of the Saar valley can be enjoyed across the Pinschbach valley and from Altfels.
