Kordel: Between the Kyll Valley and Sandstone
Accommodation in Kordel
Kordel lies in a narrow basin in the lower Kyll Valley, shaped by the Kyll and the Welschbilliger and Kimmlinger streams. The steep, mostly wooded slopes reveal the area’s geological character: Upper Bunter Sandstone is overlain by Muschelkalk sandstone. The river, rock formations and a long cultural history give the town its distinctive character. When planning your trip, you can combine nature and history with cycling and an outdoor pool in the Kyll Valley.
The Kyll Valley and Sandstone
At Kordel’s eastern edge, the Kyll’s natural riverbed curves around Vogelskopf. Sandstone is also part of the town’s history: the exposure and quality of Voltzia sandstone led to the development of Kordel’s sandstone industry from 1870 onwards. The landscape can therefore be viewed as more than just a river valley; the stone is also part of its industrial past.
Archaeological and Architectural Traces
Kordel’s archaeological heritage dates back to the Late Palaeolithic. It includes Genoveva Cave and ring walls on the heights of the Kyll Valley. Finds from Genoveva Cave span the Palaeolithic, Roman and medieval periods, as well as more recent times. The cave is about 15 metres wide, and its ceiling is approximately 8 to 10 metres above the floor. The wide time span represented by the finds makes it a special point of reference for the town’s archaeological history. Parts of the Roman Long Wall also lie within Kordel’s municipal area.
A later period is reflected in today’s parish church: built between 1865 and 1867, it is a Neo-Gothic hall church made of grey-yellow sandstone. Ramstein Castle, a Gothic ruin on a sandstone crag in the Kyll Valley, is also close to Kordel. Together, the cave, Long Wall, church and castle ruin illustrate different chapters of cultural history, while Kordel’s appeal extends beyond any single period.
Swimming, Cycling and the Hochmark
Kylltalbad is an outdoor swimming complex in the Kyll Valley, with spacious sunbathing lawns and four pools. The non-swimmer pool has a long slide, play equipment and a water fountain. Kylltalbad also offers a slackline, beach volleyball, basketball and table tennis. Its facilities therefore cater both to swimming and to a range of games and sports. If you’re planning a day at the pool, it’s worth checking the current opening hours.
The Kyll Cycle Route passes through Kordel and follows the Kyll towards Trier. The route from Losheimergraben to Trier is 121.4 kilometres long and is classified as moderately difficult. When planning, it is worth distinguishing between the section through town and details for the full route. This helps you understand both the local connections and the length of the route as listed. For specific stages, check the latest route information. There are already 492 kilometres of cycle paths in the Trier-Saarburg district.
Hiking is popular on the Hochmark, and local restaurants are also popular places to stop. A reconstructed glass-melting furnace is a notable attraction there. Alongside riverside and cycling trips, hikes and a glimpse into the history of glassmaking are other possible interests to consider when planning your trip.
