Reinsfeld – Nature, Hiking Trails and History
Accommodation in Reinsfeld
Reinsfeld lies at the foot of Rösterkopf in Saar-Hunsrück Nature Park. Hiking and cycling meet a long history here. You can compare a circular hike with longer stages or a day on the cycle path, then plan your stay around what appeals to you most. Nature, activity and history offer different perspectives for planning your trip.
Landscape at Rösterkopf
Rösterkopf reaches 708 metres and is the highest elevation in the Osburger Hochwald. The Osterbachtal Nature Reserve near Reinsfeld covers 24 hectares and was designated in 1999. Its height and protected status give the landscape two specific points of reference.
Hiking: from circular trails to long-distance routes
The Frau Holle Dream Loop is a circular trail about nine kilometres long. It starts in Reinsfeld and follows the valleys of the Lauschbach and Wadrill. Its circular route, length and course through two named valleys provide specific points to consider when choosing a hike.
Dream Loops mostly follow narrow, natural paths, passing streams, rock formations, viewpoints, and natural or cultural monuments. So it is not just the distance but also the landscape features described that shape the character of these hiking trails.
The Saar-Hunsrück Trail is another option for hikes around Reinsfeld. This long-distance trail stretches for 410 kilometres over 27 stages, with a spur leading to Trier. Compared with the roughly nine-kilometre Frau Holle loop, its overall length is on a very different scale. These two distances help distinguish a single circular hike from a multi-stage trek.
Cycling and the bike bus
For more than 90 percent of its route, the Ruwer-Hochwald Cycle Path follows the former Ruwerbahn railway line. A 6.3-kilometre section runs between Hermeskeil and Reinsfeld. The cycle path is considered family-friendly, and Reinsfeld has an adventure playground.
The RegioRadler Ruwer-Hochwald connects Reinsfeld with the Moselle Valley and Türkismühle and carries up to 22 bicycles. Check the timetable before setting off if you plan to use the bike bus. This lets you account for the bus connection when planning the timing of your cycling trip.
Local history and practical information
Reinsfeld was first mentioned in 981 under the name “Reionis campus”. The patronage of Saint Remigius is linked to an old parish tradition; Reinsfeld is recorded as a parish in 1330. These dates add a historical perspective to the nature and activity themes.
The Frau Holle car park, near Reinsfeld on the Hunsrückhöhenstraße, is a useful point of reference. The Heimatverein barbecue hut is rented through the Reinsfeld Citizens’ and Tourist Information Office. From May to October, arrangements are made through the information office; during the winter months, they are made by phone.
When looking for accommodation in Reinsfeld, use your planned daily routine as a starting point: a single loop, longer hiking stages or cycling each offer a different focus.
