Wincheringen combines winegrowing with a townscape that reflects different eras. Vineyards along the Moselsteig, tastings at several wineries, and historical landmarks ranging from an archaeological discovery to 19th-century buildings give the town its distinctive character. When planning your trip, you can decide whether to focus on wine tastings and insights into winemaking or on the town’s architecture and history.

Winegrowing and Wine Tastings

The vineyards of Weingut Gries are located in Wincheringen and Nittel along the Moselsteig, around large limestone cliffs. Here, vineyards and hiking trails meet at close quarters. Weingut Matthias Hild is a fourth-generation family business specializing in Elbling. The grapes are harvested by hand, and the vines are cultivated without herbicides or insecticides. Wine tastings are also available.

Weingut Michael Backendorf combines a long tradition of winegrowing with environmentally friendly cultivation. Tastings take place in the tasting room or wine cellar. The winery also explains various stages of the process: growing and tending the vines, harvesting, processing, and winemaking in the cellar. This gives you the chance to learn about the stages of wine production, not just sample the finished wines.

Burg Warsberg is the most important vineyard site of Weingut Hermann Schneider. Its hillside location and exposure to the sun create suitable conditions for growing different grape varieties. The winery produces wine, sparkling wine, and spirits on site and offers tastings for individual visitors as well as groups of up to 70 people. By comparison, Weingut Gries accommodates groups of 10 to 30 people. These different group sizes offer an initial guide; confirm the date and arrangements directly with the winery in advance.

For information about vineyard walks and wine-related events, you can contact Weingut Hermann Schneider. A chilled wine vending machine is noted as a brief stop on the Palzem–Nittel stage of the Moselsteig; check its availability before visiting.

Church, Castle, and Historical Traces

St. Peter’s Parish Church is a three-aisled Neo-Gothic basilica. It was built in 1883/84 to designs by Reinhold Wirtz. The listed area of the former moated castle and cemetery includes a 15th-century defensive tower, a 16th-century manor house, and sections of the northern curtain wall. A medieval round defensive tower is considered a local landmark; the village church’s bells hang inside it. The cultural spaces in the Warsberg Castle complex are also opened for events.

An archaeological connection to the town is the so-called Grave of the Rich Treveran Woman, discovered in Wincheringen in 1936. The Helenenkreuz on the old Roman road is a wayside cross dating from 1746 and was renovated in 1810. On the eastern edge of town, the listed area around Im Weissfeld, Trierer StraĂźe, WarsbergerstraĂźe, and WeinbergstraĂźe preserves the characteristic streetscape and the 19th-century expansion, with its notable farmsteads.

The former mill at Mühlenweg 3 also tells the story of the town’s architecture: the building, with its half-hipped roof, dates from 1789 and was renovated in 1877. Together with the Neo-Gothic church, the remains of the former moated castle, and the farmsteads, these buildings show the variety of historical landmarks in the townscape.
