The selection combines routes to named destinations with other trails that have different names and focuses. This means you can plan your hikes around a specific destination or one of the named trails.
Cycling with different focuses
Mountain bikers have direct access to the Vulkanbike Trail Park. Its network of routes is said to extend for around 750 kilometres; the routes are signposted, rideable in both directions and GPS-enabled. This information provides an overview of the network; routes and conditions may change, so check the latest information before setting out.
There are also options for other types of cycling: the Kosmos-Radweg Kleine Kyll, the Maare-Mosel Cycle Route and the Kylltal Cycle Route can all be reached from Deudesfeld. The local road network is considered to have little traffic and to be suitable for road cycling. This gives you a choice between a described mountain bike network, accessible cycle routes and roads suited to road cycling.
Excursions and water activities
Places to visit from Deudesfeld include the Manderscheid castles, Himmerod Abbey, the Maar- und Heimatmuseum Manderscheid, Meerfelder Maar, the Mosenberg with Windsborn Crater Lake, the Bleckhausen protected area with its juniper heath, and Wallender Born. Meerfelder Maar is also mentioned as a place for water activities: swimming at the natural bathing area and fishing are among the options there. Access and bathing conditions may vary by season; check before your visit.
The Volcanic Eifel as a regional setting
Beyond Deudesfeld, the Volcanic Eifel offers a distinct geological perspective. So far, 77 maars have been identified in the Volcanic Eifel; in addition, 350 eruption centres have been counted, around 270 of them from the more recent period. Ulmen Maar marks the most recent volcanic eruption in the Volcanic Eifel, which took place around 10,900 years ago.
Museums in the region offer further insights into these topics: the Eifel Volcano Museum in Daun features three-dimensional landscape models of cinder cones, maars and mineral springs, as well as exhibits on volcanism in the western Eifel. The Vulkanhaus Strohn is an interactive museum featuring a lava fissure wall around 30,000 years old, approximately six metres long and four metres high. In Gerolstein, the Natural History Museum displays stone evidence of the region’s geological history across three floors and is considered the Eifel’s largest and oldest geomuseum.
Hikers can also find a different kind of orientation across the wider region: the Volcanic Eifel Trails lead to scenic highlights on either side of the Eifelsteig, are marked and signposted, and include half-day hikes, day hikes and multi-day hikes. The eleventh stage of the Eifelsteig runs from Daun to Manderscheid and is 23.4 kilometres long. While the hiking options in and around Deudesfeld are described by specific destination and route names, the regional trails also let you compare tours by duration.
When looking for accommodation in Deudesfeld, you can first decide which part of the trip matters most to you: the named hikes, the different cycling options, or excursions to natural and cultural attractions. If you would also like to include the wider Volcanic Eifel in your travel plans, regional hiking formats and museums add more themes to explore.
