Schutz lies in the Little Kyll Valley, among wooded hills. The Volcanic Eifel also offers nearby destinations such as maars—water-filled volcanic craters—and the Manderscheid castles. When choosing accommodation, it’s worth first considering whether the Burberg Trail or a wider range of experiences in the Volcanic Eifel will shape your stay.

The Burberg Trail: a circular hike starting in Schutz

The HeimatSpur Burbergweg is a moderately challenging 13.1-kilometer circular hike. It starts and ends at St. Wendelin’s Chapel in Schutz. The loop takes approximately 3 hours and 45 minutes; the elevation gain and loss are each 230 meters. Taken together, the distance, elevation, difficulty level, and approximate duration provide specific points of reference for planning your day. Before setting out, it’s worth checking for current information on detours or closures. Parking for the Burberg Trail is available at the chapel on Dorfstraße in Schutz. As parking availability on site can change, check the situation shortly before you travel.

Volcanic landscapes and traces along the trail

Burberg is a volcanic mountain in the Volcanic Eifel Nature Park; it formed around 11,000 years ago. The trail passes through wooded sections and along the Speicherbach and Little Kyll streams. The remains of a Roman fortification dating from the 4th century are part of the cultural heritage along the route. On the same hike, you’ll encounter both the mountain’s geological history and a connection to Roman times.

The wider Volcanic Eifel

There’s plenty to discover in the Volcanic Eifel beyond Schutz, too. To date, 77 maars have been identified in the region, along with 350 volcanic eruption centers, around 270 of them from the more recent phase. Ulmen Maar marks the most recent volcanic eruption in the Volcanic Eifel, which took place around 10,900 years ago. Individual bodies of water showcase the landscape’s diversity: Gemünden Maar has a water surface area of around 7 hectares and is the smallest of the three famous “Eyes of the Eifel.” Windsborn Crater Lake near Bettenfeld is the only natural crater lake north of the Alps.

Hiking routes for different plans

For more days of hiking, the Volcanic Eifel Trails offer a regional selection. They lead to scenic highlights on both sides of the Eifelsteig, are marked and signposted, and include half-day hikes, full-day hikes, and multi-day treks. Two routes give a sense of the different distances. The Vulcano Trail is a 26.2-kilometer loop east of Schalkenmehren. The eleventh stage of the Eifelsteig runs from Daun to Manderscheid and is 23.4 kilometers long. Both routes are longer than the 13.1-kilometer Burberg Trail—a useful distinction if you’re deciding whether to include a single loop or longer hikes in your plans.

If the Burberg Trail is your main focus, Schutz is a natural place to look: the loop starts and ends at St. Wendelin’s Chapel in the village. If you’d like to include several hikes or maars in the Volcanic Eifel, your chosen destinations and route distances can help guide your search for a suitable place to stay.
