Gönnersdorf combines rocky landscapes and open limestone grasslands with marked trails and a long local history. The landscape includes the Wirfttal and Kylltal valleys, the Dollendorf Limestone Basin, the forests on Mottenberg, and the surrounding meadows and fields. If you are looking for accommodation, you can plan your stay around a range of interests: cycling, hiking trails, and geological or historical discoveries reveal different sides of the village.

Dolomite Cliffs, Valleys and Open Countryside

The Gönnersdorfer Leyen form a chain of dolomite cliffs on the wooded right-hand slope of the Kylltal valley. They stretch for about 200 metres and rise up to 25 metres high. The Hippelsteinchen is another dolomite rock formation whose shape resembles a mushroom: it is about five metres high and just as wide. Both formations are striking geological landmarks in the landscape.

The landscape’s former use is also visible. An abandoned dolomite quarry on the edge of the Pinnert was in operation until around 1920. Gönnersdorf’s limestone grasslands originated from woodland and were kept open by grazing. By 2010, nearly 2,200 animal species from 15 groups had also been documented in Gönnersdorf—a snapshot of local biodiversity at that point in time.

Hiking Trails and Discoveries Along the Way

Three local hiking trails are marked throughout with blue, orange and red signs. Information boards highlight points of interest along the routes; the walks start at the pavilion on the village and fountain square. One special way to learn more about the surrounding area is the educational trail on the history of the village and its landscape. Its seven boards explain historical forms of land use and their influence on the diversity of plants and animals. If you plan to follow the educational trail specifically, we recommend checking the condition of the local information boards before your visit.

The blue village loop offers views across the Kylltal valley and the Vulkaneifel. The Hippelsteinchen and Panoramic Views circular trail has a different focus: it passes through several nature reserves and includes geological and botanical highlights. In one direction, it is marked with a white arrow on an orange background. As trail markings and access conditions can change, check both before setting out.

Parking is available at the start of the blue hiking route on the village square and at the sports field towards Tüschwieschen. As parking options can change, check the current situation before travelling.

Cycling in the Kylltal Valley

Gönnersdorf is on the 130-kilometre Kylltal Cycle Route between Losheimer Graben and Trier. The Cologne–Trier railway line runs parallel to the route, making it possible to return by train. There is also a link to the neighbouring Hillesheim collective municipality’s 150-kilometre cycle network. Alongside the local hiking trails, the wider-area cycling routes therefore offer different options for planning your trip.

Traces of Local History

The first documentary mention of Gönnersdorf dates back to 1136, when the name Guntersdorf was used. It is considered likely that the village originated as a Frankish settlement around 1000. The chapel provides another point of reference: it is first mentioned in 1632. Saint Lucia has been venerated as its patron saint at least since the chapel’s consecration in 1831. Together, these details show different aspects of local history—from the presumed early settlement to the religious tradition.
