Stadtkyll lies on the upper Kyll in a scenic setting. The area’s character combines cycling with water-based and leisure activities in the Wirft Valley. For a broader regional perspective, the overarching destination of the Vulkaneifel has its own themes relating to volcanic landscapes, trails and museums.

Landscape and cycling in Stadtkyll

The municipality covers elevations between 400 and 650 metres. Together with its location on the upper Kyll, this range helps give an overview of Stadtkyll’s landscape. The Kyll Cycle Path follows a former railway line and connects to the town at two points. If you want cycling to be the main focus of your trip, this provides a specific local and route-related reference. The former railway line also gives the path its own historical character.

Leisure activities in the Wirft Valley

Leisure activities in the Wirft Valley in Stadtkyll include a bathing lake with fishing opportunities, a youth forest camp, and holiday park and camping facilities. Some leisure activities are open to the public. If a particular activity is central to your day’s plans, check its availability before your visit. On a family trip with differing interests, water-based activities and fishing offer a different focus from a cycling tour; these differences can help you prioritise your plans.

Vulkaneifel: landscape, trails and geological history

In the overarching destination of the Vulkaneifel, the view extends beyond individual landscape features to the region’s geological history. A total of 77 maars have been identified in the Vulkaneifel. In addition, 350 eruption centres have been counted, around 270 of them from the more recent phase. The Ulmen Maar marks the most recent volcanic eruption in the Vulkaneifel, which took place about 10,900 years ago. These figures offer different insights into volcanism, from the identified maars and eruption centres to an event placed in its historical timeframe.

The Vulkaneifel’s hiking options can also be distinguished by their duration. The Vulkaneifel Trails lead to scenic highlights on both sides of the Eifelsteig. They are marked and signposted, and include half-day hikes, full-day hikes and multi-day hikes. One individual circular route is the 26.2-kilometre Vulcano Trail east of Schalkenmehren. This offers a choice between hikes of various durations and a circular route with a specific distance. For mountain biking enthusiasts, the overarching destination of the Vulkaneifel also offers the Trailpark, with a network of routes around 750 kilometres long and more than 17,500 metres of elevation gain. This is a different cycling focus from the Kyll Cycle Path, which connects to Stadtkyll at two points.

The museums offer further regional themes for learning about nature and culture. The Eifel Volcano Museum in Daun displays three-dimensional landscape models of cinder cones, maars and mineral springs, as well as exhibits on volcanism in the western Eifel. The Volcano House in Strohn is an interactive museum featuring a lava fissure wall around 30,000 years old, approximately six metres long and four metres high. In Gerolstein, the Natural History Museum is considered the Eifel’s largest and oldest geological museum; its three floors display stone records of the region’s geological history.
