Alpenrod: Gräbersberg, Burgstall and History
Accommodation in Alpenrod
At Gräbersberg, the Protestant church, and along the cycling routes, Alpenrod reveals different sides: a striking elevation, local history, and active exploration. Gräbersberg reaches 513.1 meters and is considered the highest elevation in the western Westerwald between the Nister and the Rhine. Its observation tower is 73 meters high; the viewing platform is 33 meters above the ground. The Alpenroder Hütte at the foot of the tower offers refreshments.
Church History and Burgstall
There was probably already a chapel in Alpenrod in 1131. The Protestant Church of Alpenrod is a 19th-century hall church, built in 1843/1844. Remains of a medieval predecessor building have been preserved in its tower. An alms box dating from 1596 comes from the former church.
Burgstall Alpenrod has visible traces in the terrain and is considered a motte and lowland castle. The site is freely accessible unless the meadow is being used for farming. Parking for Burgstall is available on MittelstraĂźe; follow the local signs when you arrive.
Another historical trace is the Alte PoststraĂźe, a road diversion near Alpenrod. It served local traffic and is documented in a register from 1689.
Cycling and Nordic Walking
The Nister Cycle Route uses forest tracks through Alpenrod and leads from the Nister Valley up to the highlands and on to Hachenburg. The Westerwald-Lahn Cycle Route runs through Alpenrod and Lochum on its way to Linden and Dreifelden. Route conditions can change; check current route information before setting off.
The “Maximilians-Runde” Nordic walking tour in Alpenrod starts at the parking lot below Gräbersberg. You can travel by train to the tour via Hachenburg, Bad Marienberg/Nistertal, or Rothenhain. Check connections and timetables before you travel.
More Landscape and Cultural Highlights in the Westerwald
The Westerwald also has elevations of different heights: Gräbersberg is considered the highest elevation in the western Westerwald between the Nister and the Rhine; the 657-meter-high Fuchskaute is the highest elevation in the entire Westerwald. The Rhine-Westerwald Nature Park offers hiking opportunities in the Westerwald’s gently rolling uplands and in the Wied Valley.
Stöffel Park is a former basalt quarry site covering around 140 hectares in the Westerwald, combining industrial heritage, geological history, and nature. Fossils are on display in the TERTIÄRUM, including the famous “Stöffel mouse.” The fossils exhibited there document around 25 million years of geological history. Another cultural highlight is Hachenburg’s historic town center in the Westerwald: restored half-timbered houses define the Alter Markt, and the Löwenbrunnen fountain is also part of its historic ambience.
