Westerwald: Nature, Culture and Unique Experiences
Accommodation in Westerwald
The Westerwald combines landscapes shaped by basalt with traces of geological history and vibrant local culture. Gorges, ponds and river valleys sit alongside hiking trails, fossils, ceramics and half-timbered houses. There are several ways to plan your trip: experience nature, go on a longer hike or explore the region’s cultural history. If you’re travelling with family, you can tailor your choices to your fellow travellers’ interests and combine days with different themes.
A landscape of basalt and water
At 657 metres, Fuchskaute is the highest point in the Westerwald. Holzbach Gorge offers a very different landscape: the gorge is about one kilometre long, and its basalt walls reach heights of up to 30 metres. The Westerwälder Seenplatte is a nature area with seven ponds. Along the Wied, idyllic views and unspoilt nature shape the landscape. These places offer different highlights, from striking geological formations and ponds to riverside views.
Stöffel Park also brings several themes together in one place. The approximately 140-hectare site of a former basalt quarry combines industrial heritage, geological history and nature. The TERTIÄRUM displays fossils, including the famous “Stöffel mouse”. They document around 25 million years of geological history. Here, you can discover the geological past not only through the landscape, but also through actual finds.
Hiking different stages
The WesterwaldSteig is a 235-kilometre long-distance hiking trail through the Westerwald, with 16 stages. It is certified as a “Qualitätsweg Wanderbares Deutschland” and is one of the “Top Trails of Germany”. The Druidensteig offers a different scale: it runs for 94 kilometres over seven daily stages through seven river valleys and passes more than 30 geo-information points. The distance, number of stages and themed stops can help you choose a route to suit your preferred hiking distance and interests. Check the current route plan before setting off.
The “Weltende” nature trail in the Kroppacher Schweiz offers another way to experience nature. It follows narrow paths, including sections secured with wire ropes, and unpaved trails; along the way, you’ll find views across the Nister Valley. Conditions and access can vary seasonally, so it’s worth checking the latest information before setting out. For families and other travel groups, the contrast between longer stage routes and a nature trail with narrow sections is a practical planning consideration: the key is deciding what kind of hiking experience you want to prioritise.
Fossils, clay and local history
The Westerwald Ceramic Museum explores the history of working with clay. The objects on display usually originated in a Westerwald clay pit. Visitors can get creative in the well-equipped museum workshop under expert guidance. If you’re planning to visit a workshop, check the programme and booking conditions before your trip.
Hachenburg combines a historic townscape with its own brewery experience. The historic town centre is characterised by restored half-timbered houses around the Alter Markt; the Löwenbrunnen fountain is also part of its charm. The Hachenburger Erlebnis-Brauerei offers beer experience tours and brewing courses. Individual appointments can be arranged by phone; check the current booking arrangements directly with the brewery. If local history and a brewery experience are to be highlights of your trip, consider Hachenburg as a specific place to search for accommodation.
Planning your outings
The Hoher Westerwald Tourist Information Office provides information about sights, day trips, hiking, cycling and Nordic walking tours, guided hikes and winter sports. It also sells tickets for attractions including the “Herbstlabyrinth” stalactite cave. Information services and ticket arrangements are useful resources when planning; check the latest details if you’d like to use them.
Whether you’re more interested in geological history, crafts, historic townscapes or outdoor activities, the Westerwald offers different ways to shape your stay.
