Eitelborn is particularly appealing to travelers who want to combine a trip to a castle with hiking and time outdoors. Sporkenburg Castle is the main attraction; the Wäller Tour Augst, the signposted Castle Trail and the barbecue hut also offer different ways to shape your stay. You can choose between a hiking route with clearly stated distance and elevation, a dedicated trail to the ruins, and a place to barbecue together.

Sporkenburg Castle: Building History and Digital Discoveries

Sporkenburg Castle was built in 1310 by Heinrich von Helfenstein above the Emsbach Valley. French troops destroyed the castle during the Thirty Years’ War. Its history thus spans from its medieval construction to its destruction in the war. Today, its accessible ruins are among the destinations on the Wäller Tour Augst; a signposted Castle Trail also leads to Sporkenburg Castle.

Digital offerings at the castle include an augmented reality experience featuring a virtual castle ghost, as well as audio stories and an interactive ghost quiz, which are mentioned on an information sign. In August 2025, the audio content could be accessed on site via QR code, without installing an app or registering. Before your visit, check locally whether these digital offerings are still available. This will help you decide whether to complement your trip with the interactive content or focus mainly on exploring the ruins and their history.

Hiking the Wäller Tour Augst and the Castle Trail

The regional Wäller Tour Augst is a moderately difficult hiking route covering 14.1 kilometers, with 381 meters of ascent and 382 meters of descent. It reaches the outskirts of Eitelborn and continues to the accessible ruins of Sporkenburg Castle. Open sections with paddocks alternate with mixed forest. The tour also offers views across Eitelborn and Kadenbach and follows meadow paths and valley meadow paths in the Binnbach Valley, through woodland and across open landscapes. The distance and elevation gain give you a concrete basis for planning your hiking day.

If you want to head straight to Sporkenburg Castle, the signposted Castle Trail starts on the eastern edge of Eitelborn, near Erlenweg and the cemetery. As conditions in the forest can change, check them before setting out. For a longer hiking plan in the Westerwald, the WesterwaldSteig offers a different scale: this long-distance hiking trail runs for 235 kilometers through the Westerwald and is divided into 16 stages. Check the distance and stages in the current route planner before your trip.

Emsbach Valley: Meadows, Forest and Traces of Mining

In the Emsbach Valley landscape, the steep-sided valley is deeply incised, reaching depths of up to 250 meters compared with the surrounding uplands. Its valley floor is used mainly as pastureland. The slopes around Kadenbach and Arzbach are home to meadows and pastures, as well as some dry grassland and orchards. The remaining areas are forested, with deciduous trees slightly predominating. In the wider landscape, open areas used for agriculture alternate with woodland. Shafts and small spoil heaps also bear witness to the former importance of ore mining there.

A barbecue hut for spending time outdoors together

For an outdoor get-together, Eitelborn offers a barbecue hut with space for 40 people indoors and 150 outdoors. Facilities include electricity, water and toilets; there is also a covered outdoor area and a fire pit. These capacities will help you assess whether the hut is suitable for your group size. If you would like to include it in your plans, check the booking conditions in advance, as they may change.
