Church and local history
The Church of the Assumption of Mary brings together several building phases. Its Romanesque west tower has a Late Gothic upper section and an octagonal spire. After the fire of 1768, the nave was rebuilt in 1769. The Baroque high altar and pulpit have been preserved inside. The different architectural elements give the church a layered appearance.
The organ is another special feature: the Schöler organ from Bad Ems dates from 1785 and has been preserved almost unchanged. A second manual was added later. Together with the high altar and pulpit, it tells the story of the church’s furnishings, although the individual elements do not necessarily date from the same period.
Several half-timbered houses dating from the 17th and 18th centuries have been preserved in the historic centre. Their traditional infill panels are made of straw and clay, while slate characterises the roofs. This building style offers a different accent from the church’s stone architecture and also makes the village centre architecturally interesting.
