In the Saarpfalz District, historic sites, archaeological landmarks and destinations in nature come together with a range of ways to explore the region. You might be interested in cultural history and museums, plan trails through the Orchid Area, or make the route of a hike or cycle tour the starting point for your trip. The sights each have a different focus and offer concrete pointers to help you decide which places to consider when looking for accommodation.

History, Archaeology and Everyday Life

Kirkel Castle was first mentioned in a document in 1075. It was abandoned during the Thirty Years’ War and finally destroyed in 1689. Near Blieskastel stands the Gollenstein: it is around 5,000 years old and is considered one of Germany’s oldest cultural monuments. Both sites offer a glimpse into eras separated by a considerable span of time.

Museums offer insights into more recent everyday and working life. The Altenkirch family’s Museum of Rural Everyday Culture in Rubenheim is housed in a former inn and farmhouse dating from the first half of the 18th century. Its exhibits tell of the lives of farming families, day labourers, craftspeople and workers in the 19th and 20th centuries. At the Saarland Mining Museum in Bexbach, an extensive underground demonstration mine takes visitors through the changing history of mining in Saarland. It showcases both old and new extraction techniques.

Caves and Museum Visits

In Homburg, individual visitors can explore the Schlossberg Caves across three levels. You can also experience Homburg’s Vauban Fortress with an interactive audio guide, the “Lauschtour.” App content and availability may change; check the latest information before your visit. At the Schwarzenacker Roman Museum, a guided tour of the open-air museum is available and takes about an hour. As tour options and booking procedures may change, check the current options in advance.

The experiences differ: at the Schlossberg Caves, the focus is on visiting several levels; the Lauschtour offers an interactive audio guide; and at Schwarzenacker, the guided tour lasts about an hour. When planning your days, you can use these differences, alongside the locations themselves, to help guide your choices.

Orchids, Conservation and Trails near Gersheim

Parts of the Gersheim Orchid Area have been protected since 1957. The Orchid Trail has ten information stations explaining special species, their local distribution and the preservation of their habitats. There are two routes of different lengths to choose from: the short circular trail is 1.8 kilometres long and has seven stations. The long hiking trail to the limestone spring marsh is 2.7 kilometres long and has ten stations. You can weigh up which route best fits your day’s plans based on its length and number of stations; check current information about the route and waymarkers before setting out.

You can reach the Orchid Area on Biosphere Bus 501 to Gersheim bus station; from there, it is about a 30-minute walk. Check the current route and timetable before travelling, and include the walk in your plans.

Hiking and Cycling as a Focus of Your Trip

Longer routes can also give your trip a different framework. The Bliessteig quality long-distance hiking trail starts in Sarreguemines, France. Its first two daily stages run through the municipality of Mandelbachtal; the trail then continues through the Saarpfalz District to Bexbach. In Bexbach, the Höcherberg mining trails comprise four day hikes and the Haldenschleife, which leads through meadows and forests to remnants of mining culture.

For cycling tours, the Saarpfalz District is responsible for signposting the tourist Seven Ponds Route, Adebar Route, Bickenalb Route, European Mill Cycle Route, Bliesgau Cycle Route, Glan-Blies Route and Vélo-Vis-à-vis cycle network. It is worth checking current routes and signage before setting out.
