Haldensleben: Medieval History, Museums and Cycling Routes
Accommodation in Haldensleben
Haldensleben combines a striking medieval townscape with museums and a rich craft tradition. The historic centre is enclosed by 1.6 kilometres of city walls. Its alleys, squares, half-timbered houses and town towers still follow the medieval street plan almost unchanged. There are also cycling routes of varying lengths and with different cultural themes, ranging from the town’s history to traditional brick production. You can tailor your stay to the experiences that interest you most.
The Old Town tells the story of the town
The city walls give the historic centre a clearly defined outline, while the old alleys and squares within them shape its character. The Bülstringer Gate Tower was built around 1250–1260. The Reiterstandbild Roland (equestrian statue of Roland) also stands out for a special feature: of the 24 surviving Roland statues, it is the only one depicted on horseback. An exhibition on the development of Haldensleben presents photographs and reproductions of historical postcards, offering another perspective on the town’s development.
Since 1910, the Haldensleben Museum has been housed in a Neoclassical stucco building constructed in 1865–1866. Part of the museum is devoted to the partial estates of Jacob and Wilhelm Grimm. Here, architectural history and a literary theme come together. If you enjoy discovering the different facets of a place, exploring its historic townscape and visiting the museum offer complementary experiences.
Culture and landscape in the wider Börde destination
In the wider Börde destination, the landscape stretches from the fertile Börde in the south—with Germany’s largest continuous area of black earth—to the meadows and wetlands of the Drömling in the north. Wooded ridges and the Colbitz-Letzlinger Heide, home to Europe’s largest continuous lime forest, shape the centre of the district.
Cultural highlights in the wider Börde destination include Hundisburg Castle and the Hundisburg Brickworks Technical Monument. Hundisburg Castle and its Baroque garden are part of “Garden Dreams – Historic Parks in Saxony-Anhalt”. The garden displays perfect symmetry and detailed horticultural artistry. The Technical Monument combines a brickworks and a technology museum featuring bricks made using the hand-striking method. There is also a coarse ceramics workshop for moulding and pottery, a building materials workshop and a carpentry shop. Guided tours of the technology museum, courses and regular events round out the programme.
Activities among forests, water and cycling routes
The Forest Centre offers interactive ways to learn about forests through games, exploration and practical activities. Water sports are part of Haldensleben’s offering thanks to its location on the Mittelland Canal, as well as its marina and Haldensleben Rolli-Bad swimming pool. Check visitor access and operating details before you travel if you plan to visit these attractions.
Two cycling routes of different lengths are the main options: the Aller-Elbe Cycle Route is around 80 kilometres long, connects the Aller and Elbe cycle routes, and passes through Haldensleben’s historic Old Town. The Ohre-Beber Cycle Route is an approximately 12-kilometre loop around Haldensleben. These distances give you a clear basis for choosing a route without specifying a particular journey time. If you want to include the Old Town in your ride, the Aller-Elbe Cycle Route offers a clear connection; the shorter route is a different option.
