In Ausleben, church and village history meet historic sites in the local districts. Located between the Harz Mountains and Magdeburg in the Western Börde, the town combines cultural discoveries with surroundings that are also ideal for cycling and relaxing in the countryside.

St. Petri and Local History

The restored St. Petri Church was first mentioned in 1305 and rebuilt in 1781. Instead of holding regular services, it welcomes visitors for historical presentations, concerts and exhibitions. This makes the church a place where architectural history and cultural life come together.

St. Petri is also home to the Village History Rooms. Spread across two gallery levels, numerous exhibits show life in Ausleben and the surrounding area. An extensive exhibition is devoted to the painter Heinrich Gans, who was born in Ausleben. A visit to the museum therefore offers both insights into village history and an opportunity to explore the work of an artist from the area.

Architecture and Mill History in the Local Districts

In Ottleben, Trautenburg Castle was built on the remains of a moated castle. The late Romanesque village church of St. Stephen houses aristocratic memorials. The Trogsche post mill adds a technical dimension: on German Mill Day, it opens for tours and milling demonstrations. Ottleben thus brings together architectural history, sacred memorials and milling technology.

Ăśplingen, too, has its own architectural highlight: the fully restored octagonal church is associated with the history of Georg Wilhelm Wahnschaffe and serves as a venue for celebrations and concerts. Its design and use set it apart from the historic churches in Ausleben and Ottleben.

Countryside and Getting There

The surroundings of Ausleben are considered ideal for cycling tours, nature experiences and relaxing in the countryside. These activities complement visits to the churches and historic sites with a different focus. The nearby B245 provides a connection to Ausleben. The A2 is approximately 20 minutes away; Oschersleben, Halberstadt, Helmstedt and Wolfsburg are also easily reached from Ausleben.

The Wider Picture: Börde

The wider Börde travel destination extends from the fertile Börde in the south—the largest contiguous area of black soil in Germany—to the meadows and wetlands of the Drömling in the north. Wooded ridges and the Colbitz-Letzlingen Heath define the centre of the district. The heath stretches from Altmark in the north to the Ohre River and the Mittelland Canal in the south, near Magdeburg, and includes Europe's largest continuous lime forest.

The cultural highlights of the Börde also extend beyond the history of individual towns. Notable destinations in the district include churches, monasteries, palaces, castles, museums and historic buildings. The “Romanesque Road” includes ten different sites here. Numerous palaces, castles and manor houses also bear witness to the former wealth of the landed nobility.

Hundisburg Palace is one of the most significant rural Baroque palaces in Saxony-Anhalt and is distinguished by its historic gardens and parkland. The Baroque garden showcases perfect symmetry and detailed garden design. The Hundisburg Brickworks Industrial Monument offers a very different way to explore regional history: it brings together a brickworks and a technology museum featuring brick production using the hand-striking method, a coarse ceramics workshop for moulding and pottery, a building materials workshop and a carpentry shop. The historic narrow-gauge railway offers visitors a ride of about two kilometres past historic kilns, a bucket-chain excavator and the former clay pit.
