Derenburg offers several different reasons to get to know the town: historical traces around the market square and on Bocksberg, the trail through Osterholz and the Harzkristall glassworks. The route takes in local history, views of the Harz and a destination with an adventure playground. There is also practical information for getting to the glassworks—a bus stop right on the grounds and a cycle route that passes by.

Local History between the Market Square and Bocksberg

Derenburg was first mentioned in a document in 937 and is one of the region’s oldest inhabited settlements. A prominent landmark in the town is the town hall: it stands between St. Trinitatis Church and the market square and was built in half-timbered style in 1789. The Derenburg menhir, also called a monolith, was re-erected in 2004 during archaeological excavations carried out as part of the construction of federal highway 6, now the A36. Together, the town hall and menhir offer insights into different chapters of the town’s history.

On Bocksberg, at the junction of the Derenburg circular hiking trail and the Route of the German Emperors and Kings of the Middle Ages in the Harz, an updated information board provides details about the town’s history. If you are following either of the two trails, the board offers another point of connection with the past. The board and the town hall highlight different aspects: one focuses on the town’s history, the other on the architectural history of a building.

Circular Trail and Views in Osterholz

The Derenburg Osterholz circular trail starts and ends at Derenburg market square. On the western side of Osterholz, it offers unobstructed views of the Harz Mountains, the Brocken and the silhouette of Wernigerode Castle. The route thus links its starting point in town with views of prominent features of the landscape. Also important for planning your day: the route is suitable for cycling, but the relevant section at Thyrstein is skipped, and the climb is made on foot.

A bench and a shelter just a few steps away invite you to stop for a picnic along the Thyrstein section. You can take a break from your hike here. If you are cycling, you can plan the cycle route and the climb at Thyrstein, which is made on foot, as separate parts of your trip.

Harzkristall: Playground, Bus and Cycle Route

The Harzkristall glassworks in Derenburg has an adventure playground for children of all ages. For families, it is a practical stop that adds a place to play to a visit to the glassworks. The “Glasmanufaktur Harzkristall” bus stop is right on the grounds. Route 231 between Wernigerode and Halberstadt runs every 60 minutes; check the current timetable before travelling.

The site is also accessible by bicycle: the R1 EuroVelo route runs directly past it along the Holtemme, and cyclists can reach the grounds from there. This destination therefore offers both a bus connection and a cycle route to help you plan your visit. The specific route number and frequency are especially useful when fitting a visit into your day.

More to Discover in the Wider Destination of Blankenburg (Harz)

The wider destination of Blankenburg (Harz) offers additional cultural and landscape attractions in their own right. The Herbergsmuseum Blankenburg is Germany’s only historic journeymen’s hostel that has been converted into a museum, and it features a themed exhibition about the travels of journeymen. Opening times vary by season. At Regenstein Castle and Fortress, the open-air museum gives visitors access to various historic rooms and displays exhibits on the history of the Regenstein family.

Nature and water offer a different experience there, too: in the Heers, imposing sandstone rocks stand in a forest clearing about the size of a football field, with caves formed in some of them. The “Am Thie” outdoor swimming pool is in the centre of Blankenburg (Harz), borders Thiepark and offers swimming without chlorine. The pool is open seasonally; check current operating information before visiting.

Your search can therefore focus on the experiences you want to make the centrepiece of your trip.
