Timmenrode combines a distinctive Harz landscape with a rich local history. Two very different hiking experiences are at the heart of your stay: an easy circular walk through meadows and Hasental, and the rocky ridge trail along the Devil’s Wall. The village also has traces of its history, while the wider destination of Blankenburg (Harz) offers further nature and cultural attractions.

Hiking between Hasental and the Devil’s Wall

An easy circular hiking trail connects the districts of Cattenstedt, Wienrode and Timmenrode. Comfortable paths lead through scenic meadows and past gnarled old fruit trees as they wind through Hasental. The open landscape and old trees give this route its own distinctive character. If you’re planning a day of hiking, it offers a different experience from the narrow rocky passages of the Devil’s Wall.

The Devil’s Wall stretches between Großvaterfelsen in Blankenburg (Harz) and the Hamburger Wappen near Timmenrode. Its winding ridge trail crosses cliffs and passes through narrow rock crevices from one of these endpoints to the other. The Hamburger Wappen is also checkpoint 74 on the Harzer Wandernadel hiking badge trail. When planning your routes, you can choose between an easy walk through Hasental and the rocky trail along the ridge.

Historical traces in Timmenrode

During the Thirty Years’ War (1618–1648), Timmenrode and its surroundings were severely devastated. According to reports, the church and parish house in Timmenrode were built in 1696. These two accounts relate to different periods in the village’s history: a time of great destruction and a later report of construction. Together, they add a historical perspective to the landscape.

More nature and culture in Blankenburg (Harz)

In the wider destination of Blankenburg (Harz), the Harzer Klosterwanderweg, E 11, Wege deutscher Kaiser & Könige and Teufelsmauerstieg trails all pass directly through the town. A popular circular hike of about 8 kilometres leads from Großvaterfelsen along the ridge trail and below the Devil’s Wall through Heidelberg. Check current trail conditions locally before setting out on this route.

Culture lovers will also find a variety of places to explore there. The Herbergsmuseum Blankenburg is Germany’s only historically preserved journeymen’s hostel that has been developed as a museum. It features a themed exhibition on journeymen’s travels; opening times are seasonal. The open-air museum at Regenstein Castle and Fortress provides access to various historic rooms and displays exhibits about the history of the Regenstein family.

The Heers is one of the landscape features in the wider destination: mighty sandstone rocks, some with caves, stand in a forest clearing about the size of a football pitch. The terrace garden in the Schlossgärten Blankenburg was laid out in 1718. For a day of swimming, the “Am Thie” natural outdoor pool offers chlorine-free bathing. It is in the centre of Blankenburg (Harz), next to Thiepark; the pool is open seasonally, so check its current operating status before your visit.

Choose the right focus for your stay

When choosing accommodation, consider which experiences you want to shape your trip. Timmenrode offers specific points of interest around Hasental, the Hamburger Wappen and the ridge trail. If you’re also planning to visit the museums, terrace garden or outdoor pool, those details refer to Blankenburg (Harz). Compare the location of the accommodation you’re considering with the places you’d like to visit, and take into account the museum’s seasonal opening times and the pool’s seasonal operating schedule.
