Ilsenburg (Harz) combines industrial history with hiking trails and experiences in nature. The Art Casting Museum’s interactive exhibition traces the history of the ironworks industry; the Ilse Valley and Ilsestein put the focus on landscape and outdoor activities. There are also various ways to learn about Ilsenburg’s town and monastery history. This lets you shape your stay around the topics that interest you most.

Art Casting and Industrial Culture

Located in central Ilsenburg, the Art Casting Museum is dedicated to the historical development of the ironworks industry, particularly art casting. The exhibition ranges from 16th-century cast-iron art, including stove plates, to art casting of the 19th and 20th centuries. This offers a broad historical overview without limiting the display to any one period.

The building itself is also part of the town’s history: the museum is housed in the former manor house of the count’s estate, later known as the domain. Anyone interested in Ilsenburg’s artisanal and industrial past will find the exhibition and its historical setting in one place.

Town History at Your Own Pace

The Ilsenburg Iron Trail is an educational trail through the town’s history, from iron production and processing in the early Middle Ages to the present day. Its theme is the journey “from ore to metal.” It broadens the historical perspective of the Art Casting Museum, tracing the development of iron and metal across several eras.

For a concise introduction, there is a virtual town tour along an approximately 3 km QR code route through the town’s history. It takes about an hour. A two-hour guided tour also covers the town and monastery history, leading through the town center and exploring the history and culture of Ilsenburg Abbey Church. The tours therefore differ both in duration and focus. Check the latest route details for the virtual tour and booking information for the guided walk in advance.

Ilse Valley and Ilsestein

The Ilse Valley lies southwest of Ilsenburg. The scenic and varied Heinrich Heine Hiking Trail runs along the Ilse; one of its special attractions is the cascade-like Ilse Falls. The trail leads through the Ilse Valley from Ilsenburg to the Brocken. Along the way, you can explore the diversity of habitats in Harz National Park.

Another striking landform is Ilsestein, which rises 160 meters above the valley, high above Ilsenburg’s rooftops. Families may also enjoy the hike to Ilsestein, which is described as child-friendly: it starts at Blochhauer, follows the Ilse, crosses a bridge and then takes a nature trail to Ilsestein. The route description sets out a clear sequence, so you can easily distinguish this hike from the Heinrich Heine Hiking Trail.

Hiking Destinations and Nature Information

On the southern edge of town, the Ilsetal National Park Visitor Center has an exhibition about life in the beech forest. There is also something to discover in the center’s garden. From May to October, HVB bus route 274, the “Ilsetaler,” connects Ilsenburg with numerous hiking destinations in Harz National Park. If you are planning trips to the national park during your stay, check the current timetable before setting off.

The Harz provides the wider regional setting for your trip. Harz National Park covers 24,732 hectares, around ten percent of the entire Harz region. At 1,141 meters, the Brocken is the highest peak in the Harz and lies within the national park’s core zone. This information adds a sense of the region’s scale to the local opportunities in Ilsenburg.

Ilsenburg offers a range of ways to plan a trip that brings both together.
