Selke-Aue brings together specific cultural sites in its districts and a natural area in the surrounding region. The Röver organ in Hausneindorf is a special point of interest for music lovers; Hakel adds forests, geology and nature conservation to the picture. The area therefore offers a range of themes that you can prioritize in different ways when planning your stay.

Culture in Hausneindorf and Wedderstedt

The Röver organ in Hausneindorf has 1,500 pipes. This striking figure makes the instrument a distinctive cultural feature of Selke-Aue and gives music lovers a specific starting point for exploring the district. Wedderstedt Manor House offers a different focus: it dates from 1893, stands directly on the main road and is used as the municipal administration building. This use may change over time. The organ and manor house thus represent two distinct local themes—an instrument and a historic building with a municipal function.

Hakel: Forest, Geology and Nature Conservation

The Hakel nature reserve lies in the surrounding area of Selke-Aue. It includes the Großer Hakel and the Kleiner Hakel, covering just under 1,400 hectares in total, and extends across the Salzlandkreis and the Harz district. Hakel is a forested area with little relief. Its geology consists mainly of rocks from the Lower Muschelkalk. The highest point is near Domburg, at 244 metres above sea level. The history of this place also has several layers: Domburg was once a Germanic place of worship and later a medieval castle.

The protected area includes zones with different levels of protection. In Hakel, 34 hectares are kept as a strict nature reserve, entirely free from human intervention. A further 3,700 hectares of the surrounding area are largely excluded from use and management. These figures make the scale of the protected areas tangible and distinguish the strict nature reserve, where intervention is entirely prohibited, from the larger surrounding area, which is largely exempt from use.

The vegetation also shapes Hakel’s character: its main vegetation consists of open oak-hornbeam forests interspersed with lime trees. Rare heat-loving species include the wild service tree (Sorbus torminalis) and the service tree (Sorbus domestica). More than 600 different species of gilled fungi have also been recorded in the nature reserve. Hakel can therefore be explored from several natural-history perspectives—from forest composition and individual plant species to its diversity of fungi.

The Harz on a Larger Scale

The broader Harz destination offers a wider perspective on a region of nature and outdoor experiences. Harz National Park covers 24,732 hectares, around ten percent of the entire Harz. Its visitor services include eight visitor centres and national park houses with information about the park, hiking tips, exhibitions and film screenings. The national park also offers guided hikes and excursions with rangers, experts, national park guides and national park forest guides; dates may change.

Another way to explore the Harz is the Harzer Wandernadel, with 222 stamping stations throughout the region. Anyone who collects all 222 stamps earns the title “Harzer Wanderkaiser” (Hiking Emperor of the Harz). These offerings are part of the broader Harz destination and illustrate the wider regional context alongside the local cultural themes and nearby Hakel.

Which themes should shape your stay?

When choosing accommodation in Selke-Aue, it helps to decide what you want your stay to focus on. For culture lovers, the Röver organ and manor house offer specific local points of interest; for a nature-focused trip, nearby Hakel is the main attraction. If you plan to explore further afield in the Harz, the offerings of the broader destination provide an additional regional framework. This distinction helps you place Selke-Aue and the wider Harz themes in your travel plans according to your interests.
