Stecklenberg lies on the northern edge of the Harz, close to Quedlinburg and Thale. The village combines hiking trails with springs and a wooded setting; cherry cultivation on the mountain slopes is part of its local character. Nearby, the ruins of Lauenburg Castle add a historical touch. This brings together landscape, outdoor activity and history as different interests to consider when planning your trip.

Hiking from Stecklenberg

The long-distance hiking trail “Weg deutscher Kaiser und Könige” (Trail of German Emperors and Kings) passes through Stecklenberg. Well-marked hiking trails also lead from here to numerous sights in the surrounding area. These offer two different hiking options: a named long-distance route runs through the village, while other trails from Stecklenberg lead to destinations nearby. When planning, you can decide whether to focus on the route itself or on excursions to sights in the surrounding area.

Springs, forests and cherry slopes

The Chlorkalziumquelle spring is located in the Röhrengrund valley near Stecklenberg. A stone bearing the inscription “Radiumquell” still stands on the slope to the left of the spring basin. The actual spring source of the “Calciumquelle” lies a good 200 m above the park-like grounds, beneath a large beech tree. Stecklenberg offers a view of the wooded surroundings. Sweet cherries grow mainly on the mountain slopes around Stecklenberg; sour cherries thrive on less suitable soils. Alongside the forests, the springs and cherry cultivation add two distinctive features to the surrounding landscape.

Lauenburg Castle and the landscape

At the ruins of Lauenburg Castle, you can take a walk around the site and visit parts of the complex, including the keep of the outer bailey. This historical destination adds a cultural focus alongside the hiking and springs. When planning your excursions, you can choose between nature experiences and a walk around the ruins.

Thale: culture and trails in the neighboring town

Thale lies right next to Stecklenberg and offers a separate area for excursions. Wendhusen Abbey was founded in Wendhusen in 825; Wendhusen is now part of Thale’s old town. The Thale Myth Trail is a themed walking route from the entrance to the Bode Gorge to the old town, featuring thirteen sculptures created by various artists.

The Harzer Bergtheater is an open-air theater on the Hexentanzplatz in Thale. Its program includes mystical stories, legendary fairy tales, operettas, musicals, plays and concerts; the program changes seasonally. The DDR Museum in Thale focuses on domestic and everyday life in the GDR.

In Thale, the chairlift operated by Seilbahnen Thale Erlebniswelt takes you to the Rosstrappe rock massif, while the cable car takes you up to the Hexentanzplatz. Timetables vary by season, so check them before your trip. Thale is also a starting point for hikes into the Bode Gorge and the trailhead for the Harzer-Hexen-Stieg.

Choosing the right place to stay

When choosing where to stay, consider your priorities: do you want Stecklenberg’s hiking trails, springs, cherry slopes and Lauenburg Castle ruins to shape your stay, or would you also like to include cultural attractions and hiking destinations in Thale? This lets you choose a location based on which experiences matter most to you on your trip to the Harz.
