Westerhausen lies on the northern edge of the Bodetal holiday region. The village combines a distinctive connection to the landscape with tangible traces of its history: Königstein is considered the village’s heraldic rock, while St. Stephani and the local history museum represent different historical themes. If you would like to bring nature and culture together in one trip, you can consider these aspects side by side.

Königstein and Protected Landscapes

A footpath through Westerhausen leads north to Königstein, a rock formation regarded as the village’s heraldic rock and described as unique in the northern Harz foreland. Königstein and other areas within Westerhausen’s municipal boundaries are designated as a landscape conservation area. The area around Westerhausen is also home to numerous sandstone rock formations protected as landscapes, with dry grasslands and dwarf-shrub heath. Thus, the distinctive individual rock and the diverse landscape features around it offer different ways to experience nature.

Architectural and Local History

St. Stephani Westerhausen dates from the 12th to the 17th century and features Romanesque and Baroque architectural styles. Its long history and diverse styles give the church a place of its own alongside the village’s landscape themes: here, the focus is on architectural history; there, on rock formations and protected habitats. Both perspectives help ensure that Westerhausen is not reduced to a single theme.

The history of discoveries is also part of Westerhausen’s story: during the great flood around 1790, when the Spültal stream overflowed here, many urns, bones and ceramic objects were found. The Westerhausen local history museum covers around 250 square metres across two floors and explores the village’s historical development, agriculture, domestic culture and community life. It displays original finds from excavations in and around Westerhausen, as well as rotating exhibitions on local topics. Many exhibits are also labelled in the local dialect. A guided tour in the local dialect can be booked by calling in advance; check its current availability before your trip.

Several named routes also pass through Westerhausen below Königstein. These include the Romanesque Road and the German Half-Timbered House Road; the Harz Foreland Cycling Route also runs through the area. The route names offer different points of interest, from Romanesque architecture and half-timbered houses to cycling. Depending on your interests, you can focus your trip planning on Romanesque architecture, half-timbered houses or cycling.

When choosing accommodation, it helps to first decide what you want to focus on during your trip: Would you mainly like to explore the village’s history, take in the landscape around Königstein, or follow one of the routes mentioned above? This will give your accommodation search a clear direction and help you choose Westerhausen according to the themes that matter to you during your stay.
