Bad Lauchstädt combines the history of a spa town with a theatre that continues to be used for its original purpose. Historic spa facilities, a Renaissance castle and sites connected with theatre and spa history give your stay a clear cultural focus. When planning, it is worth considering the different ways to visit: some sights are best explored outdoors, while others can be discovered through museums, a guided tour or an evening at the theatre. Seasonal schedules each offer their own time windows.

Theatre history on stage and in the museum

The Goethe Theatre opened on 26 June 1802; its plans were drawn up by Berlin architect Heinrich Gentz. The building has largely been preserved in its original 1802 condition and is considered the only surviving original theatre building from the Goethe era in Germany. At the same time, it continues to be used for its original purpose, bringing history and contemporary theatre practice together directly.

Between May and October, guest performances take place mainly at weekends. If you are planning an evening at the theatre, check the specific performance dates. At the New Schiller House, exhibits from Bad Lauchstädt’s more than two-hundred-year theatre history offer further insight; its notable rooms include the historic Schiller Room. The working theatre building and the museum displays offer different ways to explore the town’s theatre history.

Spa park, castle and mineral bath history

Bad Lauchstädt Renaissance Castle is a listed building beside the historic spa park. It can be viewed from the outside; the interior is not open to visitors. The Douche Pavilion, opened in 1778 and restored in 2016, now houses a museum on the history of the mineral bath that is open to visitors. A spring was discovered on the site of today’s spa park in 1704. Architect Johann Wilhelm Chryselius was commissioned to draw up an overall plan for Bad Lauchstädt’s historic spa facilities.

A seasonal guided tour of the park takes visitors through Bad Lauchstädt Spa Park and the castle moat, and includes a view of the Duke’s Pavilion. A Christiane Vulpius-themed tour of the Lauchstädt spa grounds is also offered from May to September. Another tour covers the accessible historic spa facilities, the Goethe Theatre and the permanent exhibitions in the Douche Pavilion and the New Schiller House; a visit to the theatre may be restricted by the performance schedule. Guided tours can be arranged in English by prior agreement.

At the park visitor centre, you can get tickets for the Goethe Theatre and the historic Kursaal, souvenirs, and information about tourist services, concerts, guest performances and guided tours. The different time windows help with planning: guest performances take place mainly at weekends between May and October, while the Christiane Vulpius tour is offered from May to September. If one of these experiences is to be the highlight of your stay, check the specific performance and tour dates.

Cultural sites in the wider Saalekreis destination

Beyond Bad Lauchstädt, the wider Saalekreis destination offers other distinct cultural attractions. Querfurt Castle is one of the best-preserved castle complexes in Europe and the largest in Central Germany. Wettin Castle stretches for about 500 metres along a porphyry ridge running beside the Saale and is divided into the Lower, Middle and Upper Castles. Its grounds are freely accessible to visitors, and guided tours are also available. The Petersberg Museum presents an exhibition on the history of the historic Saalkreis district. The Saalekreis thus offers a range of themes, from castle complexes and their architecture to the history of the region.
